Need DSMer's Opinions Please!

I might be buying a 97 Eclipse Gs from a local guy. I't's really nice as you can see from the pics, and is a base model gs non-turbo. Only 'performance' mods it has would be an aem intake and apexi N1 exhaust, i guess the wheels/tires too, which tells me that this guy wasn't much into racing it ... what he said too, and i didn't notice him mention anything about racing in posts on other forums.

But he has me curious, apparently there were 2 owners before him, he said he bought it for cheap from an old guy, i don't know how many miles it had on it. He said the body (odometer too) has 133k~ miles on it, but the engine only has 79k~, which makes me wonder why one of the 2 previous owners had it overhauled at such low mileage. Unless the odometer resest, from my knowledge my grandpa had an 82' Bronce that reset @ 200k miles back to zero, he overhauled it once, but is this possible? I haven't really got the straight story on it, but i was just wondering what you all think i should do. He's selling it at a really great price and it looks/sounds awesome. If i buy it what should be the first things i have checked out? Thanks for the help.

i realize that i could get a stock car with similar mileage and maybe a less quistionable history for about 4000$+ not half the price from what i've looked up in my area. That is stock, no body kit, paint job, amp + subs + alpines in the doors + jvc HU, probably not power stuff either or maybe not auto tranny. Like i mentioned earlier the parents wouldn't let me get this car if it had a turbo, they might but it would take a shit load of convincing from me. I'd rather have this for a few years, into college some, then sell and get a newer better tuner when i have the money. Sounds good to me, idk about you all...

these forums seem nice to find help on too, which i'll prolly use when diagnosing or tuning this eclipse if i get it. I hope you guys aren't like this in all the other posts though

Find a 2G Turbo for 5k and buy a body kit for 1k... Its funny, because you make fun of primered civics and cavaliers, but guess what, their gonna be making fun of you too. I think its hilarious when i see civics and all those little rice guys making fun of other cars with stickers and lawnmower mufflers and they are driving the same shit. Anyways, the main reason to go for looks is to get girls but its gonna be sad when their car is as fast as yours .....

in my town most people drive civics (prolly like other towns), don't see a ton of eclipse's, let alone fixed up ones ... maybe sleepers, i'm not looking for speeding around, just want a good looking car you know. like i said up there ^^, i'll get a fast car later when i'm not under the parents rules anymore and can afford it, etc..

i be going to his place this afternoon to check it out. If i like what i see then i'm gonna go back and pick it up this saturday w00t. i found out the history of the car. this dude bought it like a year ago or so from an older mechanic guy, he overhauled it before selling. so engine has 79k~ miles, body has 130k~ good enough. he said the only thing wrong with it is one of the door panels got a lil messed up when the body shop was putting the kit on and painting, which is no biggie to me. gotta run a carfax on it too sometime soon

i think i did a long time ago, if it runs, i'm getting it ....

then taking to mechanic to have it fully checked out to prevet any major future problems, then drive it around happily and ignore the people that say 'ricer' all the time

You need to take it to a mechanic FIRST, then get it knowing the hell is about to fall out of it.

I woudnt Suggest getting that car.. YOU will regret it.. A stock GSX is much better than a riced out non turbo 140 hp front wheel.... the car isnt worth that much...DOnt go for the looks man.. The car needs to run too..So look around for a turbo.. u might even find one with a bodykit for that price.. keep looking... (just my two cents)
