mystery oil leak

i did a uv die test for a small oil leak and it looked like a front main or a oil pump seal leaking. I got the whole kit for the front case and i have it tore apart. But after i got the lower timing cover off i noticed that not only has the oil reached my oil cooler outside but it has covered the entire inside of the timing case. Im gonna check the intake camshaft seal. but i cant say it did all of that. best i can guess is that the hole i discovered in the timing case (which i am replacing) let water splash everywhere spreading the oil around. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be. I'll try and post some pics if my camera has batteries.

Did you check the OFH bolt behind the filter? If over tightened or loose,it will leak. Most of that oil is leaking on your tire wich in return is kicking it up everywhere.

ok I have that off so is there a spacific torqe spec for it. Its just a thin thing so maybe that is it. Of course that does not explain how the UV die was coming from the timing case. So i will still replace the front mains cause the set was only like 18 bucks from napa. so i have nothing to loose but time. thanks

yeah you might as well replace all the seals while your in there. I have all the part numbers if you want them Pm me.

okay after giving it a day break I'm back to it and I don't know if i have a problem. After removing the front balance shaft seal i noticed that the balance shaft itself has about a half inch of play. I looked at the spacer for the cog and realized that would hold it all of the way out as far as play goes. Is it supposed to be able to do that. i would love to hear that it is fine but I'm not so sure and i don't want to put it back together and something else go wrong. I would love to eliminate the balance shaft and be done with it but i don't have the kit. Its not like i can just get it from a local parts store.

I'm all done just in time for school this morning and it runs great. Those front main seal were exactly the problem. They were so dry that they were just a step away from cracking. no more oil leaks and i retarded the exhaust timing by a half tooth on the stock gears. With the stock setup its so smooth that its really quiet with those stock pipes so that's my next mod. thanks for you help with my little choke ups and confusion. Im going on a road trip soon so I am gonna need it to run at its best.

hey just curious, about how long did it take you to do all of this? I am getting an oil drip down the side of the oil pan, so it has to be coming down from the front case somewhere. All you did was replace the gaskets?

i had the same problem a week ago i had oil coming off my oil cooler, dripping from under the timing cover and my timing belt was coverd in oil. it ended up being the front crank seal but to braceyoself777 and pokerfan4990, it could be a oil pump seal or a balancer shaft seal and it shouldnt take no more then 4 hours with all the parts, tools, work space and you know what you are doing.
