Well, here is my newest mods. I took pics for you guys also.

I built a "cold-air" intake for the car, and since I had a nice 3" bend of carbon fiber tubing, I decided to use it also. :thumb: I did not want to spend any money on a new air filter, so I made a quick release ring that holds the K&N filter I had been using on. (I previously modded the stock intake canister by gutting it, and welding it all up.) Total cost for the intake was $65 including the coupler, clamps, and carbon pipe which I bought off my buddy for $50. I can take the filter off from under the car for cleaning with no tools. I made a custom ring with the little clamps off another cars air cleaner cover. I still need to put the bottom shield on after I put the splash guard back on, it is made of 1/8" ABS plastic.

Other mods include an evac system for the catch can, a set of Crower's new 264/272 cams, and Unorthodox Tuner series adj. cams gears. Topped off with a new bright chrome powder coated valve cover

Let me know what you all think.

Looks good. :thumb:

My only question is do you put your inner fender well cover back on or do you leave it off? If off I would think that mud and crap would splash up on the filter.
my thoughts as well. i would make a shiled that covers the back half of the filter to protect it from dirt and junk coming off the tires

I made a cover for the bottom also. Mud does not come in through those slots as much as you would think. They are louvered and if you look closely you will see that they are made so stuff will not come in very easy. Remember it was made to protect the stock side mount. I will take a pic of the bottom tomorrow for you. And I am not worried about rain, I have never had a problem when the bottom is covered and the only way air can enter is through the front fog light location (they have been removed).

Here, I ran out a took a few real quick. :thumb:

Just to let you know I did the same thing on my 2g and after driving in the rain (under no boost) the car started running really bad the next dry day. I popped my hood and reved the motor, when the BOV opened water sprayed out every where LOTS OF WATER!! I had to end up droping the IC pipes and intercooler and drained everything. Had about 2 gallons of water in there from just about 60 miles of driving in the rain. How I didn't hyrolock my motor I don't know.

AEM bypass valve?'

Anyone use one of those? Saw a SCC article on them when they first came out and was impressed, but anyone with street experience?

Contemplating going CAI on my '95 TSi since I've got the space to do it, but with the weather the way it is here in Cleveland, Ohio, I'd like to not ruin my daily driver!

That is a lot of water! If need be I can fabricate a shield or something. It doesn't rain much here, and I only drive the car a couple times a week. I usually don't drive it when it rains. Thanks for the words of advice though.

Your welcome, I was going to fab up a flap that I could close when it rains but may just get the AEM bypass valve. Will still have to alter the pipe thu.

Were did you get the CF tube? Was thinking of the same thing, just wraping thin wall aluminum tube with CF tape.

Looks good meng :thumb: , the aem bypass valve is a great piece ive used it before and never had a problem with it. Just a suggestion, ever thought of removing the cruise control?

The CF intake tube is off a Carbonio intake kit for a 1.8T GTI. The kit cost around $180 with the crappy filter they use and a coupler. Basically, the intake pipe itself cost around $130 or so of that.

I do not want to eliminate the cruise control because it actually works good on my car, and I do not want to have a switch etc. that I am not using. It is nice on 3+ hour drives where there are cops everywhere.....

Looks really good but everytime I have seen someone run an intake like that they have complained about when it rains. But if its not your daily driver and you don't take it out in the rain then I think you are good to go. Again nice fab you got there!!!!

looks good but one question. Isn't it the intercooler's job to "cool" the air before it goes into the intake any way? i would also have a problem with water getting into my turbo and then my motor.

if the intake is sucking in colder air then it helps the intercooler even more.

very nice clean mod :thumb:

My friend had one on his h22 civic
it was all motor and he sucked the inner fins off of the bypass valve into his motor
and it was destroyed
If that could happen all motor
I wonder what would happen to a turbo charged motor or even the turbo itself

This has been discussed numerous times before. A turbo will not increase the intake temperature to a magic concrete number. Instead it will increase the temperature by a specific amount. If a cold air intake decreases the temperature before the turbo by 20 degrees, the air will be 20 degrees cooler than normal after the turbo heats it up. A cold air intake is always a good thing in an NA car or turbo car. Sorry if this doesn't make sense I'm tired from all these college tests. -Matt :dsm:

I ordered one thru Summit the other day(received it yesterday) and like any good mechanic I read the instructions before installing. AEM states "NOT TO BE USED ON TURBO,SUPERCHARGED VEHICLES" :nono: I'm like WTF so when I get home today going to have to call them. I'm thinking they mean that it can't be installed after the turbo. I'll yet ya know.
