i started hearing a noise everytime i pushed the clutch in and immediately thought it was the throwout bearing because i didnt use a mitsu one. after going and buying a new one from mistu i come home and pull the tranny out only to find the throwout bearing is in perfect shape. but when i look at the clutch i see this :notgood:

There is another thread on here where this same thing happened but with more fingers coming off. I think the thread is titled "how could this happen" or something like that.

I had huge problems with my ACT (2600,street disk) also. I had about 5,000 miles on it and the pressure plate seized up. I couldn't get the clutch to disengage (have streetlite flywheel). I tried adding a longer slave cylinder extension rod and shimming the clutch fork, I even replaced master and slave cylinder and readjusted clutch to no avail. Finally after my brand new 2.3 crankwalked at 84 miles I pulled the pressure plate and disk to find that it had locked up and all the shimming I had done caused the crank to ride against the thrust bearing and eat it up. The street disk had fractures running all the way around it and the springs were trying to fall out.
I replaced it with a Competition clutch 2400 plate with sprung ceramic disk (stage 4x). Best clutch I've ever had, I highly recommend you try one out. I will never touch another ACT!!

I also have had problems with a newer act 2600. w/ less than 2k on it. the plate let a spring loose and it wiped out every thing. In fairness I dont know if it was installed or broken in correctly. I had just bought the car so I cant be 100% sure it was not the last owners fault. I ended up buying a southbend ss stage 5 and love it! pedal pressure is half of the act. and it engages nice and smooth.

Another guy here in town had a 2100 with a street disk and one of the springs on the disk came out and did the same thing. I don't think the breakin on the disk material has anything to do with it, their just crap. :laser:

my only problem is i dont have the money for a new clutch. if i can get away with getting a new PP and only paying shipping like one of the other members have then im goin to have to go that rout. although im not happy with the product at the moment i know that many other members on here are runing ACT with no problems..

Im sure act makes a good clutch or they would have never been around this long. no matter what company you go to there going to have a certin number of failures. if they will replace it for you I would definatly go that rout. if not try some thing different and maybe it will work better for you and your driving style.

Just about all the hardcore guys here refuse to use ACT's because of stuff like this. They all have had bad personnel experiences with them. I was saying the same thing as you until it happened to me. I've used their flywheels on a couple different cars and never had a problem, but their clutches suck imo. My new competition clutch doesn't need anything to make it work right I put it in and put everything back stock.:laser:

Ive been hearing a sound which i think is my throwout bearing. I have 4000 miles on a 2100 setup. If this is my problem act's gonna have a long week ahead of them:sneaky:

My buddy had a exedy clutch in his 240sx and a spring poppped out just like that, I bet each company has had thier share.

You can always be ballsy and go 4 puck unsprug :sneaky:

Sounds like your begging to break a driveline part. I would definitely go sprung. I'm running the sprung ceramic 6 puck and it's smoother than the ACT street disk was putting around. When thwe car starts builing power or you launch you can really feel it though great compromise between the two.:laser:

I was going to get the ACT clutch kit but after seeing quite a few people having issues, I changed my mind.

I highly recommend Competition Clutch, they have a killer product. The pressure plates are from Ogura clutch in japan then they build their own disks. I beleive they even use their own material instead of reman'd mitsu stuff. I have the 4x with 2400 pound disk and the pedal is super lite feels like my buddies 2100 ACT. Also they almost completely encapsulate tne springs to prevent them from popping out.

I did'nt realize how many people have had problems with act. After reading this thread and haveing my own problems I guess act may not be as good as i once thought...I've got a south bend now after several of my friends recomended them and to be honest I love it compaired to my old act... personaly I've heard alot of bad things about putting puck style clutches on street driven cars but to each there own. has anyone had bad experances with the southbend clutch?

I was kind of worried about running a puck also but mine has been great. I think people give them a bad street rep from using or riding in cars with unsprung ones. My buddy has an EG with a B16 running a unsprung 4-puck and I absolutely hate it. I am not real sure how he hasn't broke something aside from the fact it's a honda and makes no torqe. It's an ACT also though so that may be part of the problem.:laser:

my younger brother had a 6 puck in his 99 gsx he's basically only got a full exhaust and in take running on the t25 and his only lasted about 4500miles. another friend had a 6 puck on his audi which was more "built" and he's only lasted 2 months. they both went with southbend and have never had a problem sense (2yrs.) they were the ones that pushed me in the direction of southbend.. and honestly im glad they did the clutch is nice and smooth and the pedal effort is so much less than the act 2600.

no one here is trying to hurt anyones feelings. were simply letting others know of the problems we have had with a certin product. like i said befor in this post Im sure that they do make a good clutch but they seem to have a high failure rate if you consider all the people that have had problems. just make sure you break yours in right and if something does happen to your clutch prematurly make sure you get a hold of act and demand a whole new unit. I've heard of them offering up new disks but me i would demand a completely new clutch
