hi all, my engine is starting to make an awfull noise.

My local garaje has heard it, and says it come from the belts... He thinks about a tensioner, a pulley, or the water pump. Previous owner (I bought car last saturday) says the pump was recently changed, and the belt is due to a maintenance within 3 years (from a 5 years maintenance schedule.

What you think ppl?

Here you have a video with sound
YouTube - My engine makes a bad sound

Are you afraid to open the hood? A loose pulley can make that noise, so can a rod knock or piston slap. Does it follow RPMs or does it go away when revved?

I brought the car to the garage. My mecanical has started to inspect the car, he has found that the crank pulley was against the block. The block shows important wear, and he suspects of the axial bearings being dead.

Is it repairable? I suspect that sending the block to be machined won't give a good result...

The crank pulley just needs to be replaced. The crank pulley doubles as a harmonic balancer. Therefore, it's a two piece pulley separated by a piece of rubber. That rubber over the years has been known to deteriorate and the two pieces fall apart. When this happens you get a sound quite like yours. I have personally seen this happen on every one the DSMs I have come in contact with including the 3 I have owned. Replace the crank pulley and all accessory belts and you should be good to go.

I don't understand how the crank pulley can be against the block. There is a plastic timing belt cover. Then under that are 2 toothed pulleys for the timing and balance belts. If the crank pulley was against the block.... it just couldn't be.

How can the block show wear? What type of wear? And what is an axial bearing? If there is wear on the block, it isn't from the crank pulley. The timing belt cover may be worn, but that's not horrible. My cover has a hole in it from the A/C belt rubbing because idler pulley went bad.

Why would you need to get the block machined if a crank pulley went bad? There isn't anything to machine to fix a crank pulley.

Just get the old crank pulley and look at it. If the rubber in between is damaged or missing, then replace it. It sounds like it is bad. Then just put your belts back on and you should be good to go.

It isn't a difficult fix. Could be done in under an hour if you're good.

If the crank pulley was against the block, it wouldnt run because the timing belt would already be cut in half.

As everyone has stated, replace your crank pulley. What you are experiencing is a normal occurrence with the 4g63.

While you are at it, replace your mechanic. Either he doesnt have a clue what he is doing or he is just trying to rob you. Also, tell him they are thrust bearings, not axial bearings. He could have easily check for excessive thrust play within a couple of minutes. The only way for him to notice any excessive wear is to remove the front part of the engine(crank pulley, timing belt cover, timing belt, etc) and/or the oil pan which also involves removing the transfer case, down pipe, driver side crossmember, etc. Im sure he didnt do any of these things during a diagnosis/estimate for repairs.

I apologize if I do not express myself very well about the matter. It's quite hard to translate technical problems from one language to another. That's why I am going to post pictures.

In the pictures the pulley is already out of the block.

There is the pulley. I took some pictures just to be more sure about diagnosis.

Where is Gregory house when I need him?[/QUOTE]

Lol, I don't think he would be very helpful.. Maybe if you were sick...LOL

What? No need... Just go to o'reilly's and order a new pulley for it, and call it a day. The rubber doesn't have to be gone to make it bad. Just the slightest movement of the outer metal ring will make weird noises!! Dude, replace the cheap pulley before you spend money on an overpriced mechanic to tell you nothing is wrong with the engine...

Alternatively, You can get a one piece unit from EBAY for 30 bucks or so. Either take my advice or pay someone to tell you the same thing. But I don't think your mechanic knows very much about... well... anything!!!

Well, I Supose I will be waiting until the mechanic start to open the lower engine to see how bad is the engine :(

You do not need to take apart the engine. Just replace the pulley, I doubt they have an o'reilly's in Spain, but I'm sure you can find the pulley somewhere. The video sounds like it could just be bad lifter tick, but you can't tell much with the hood closed. Find where the noise is coming from, valve cover, timing cover, or lower end.

Just replace the pulley and belts yourself. It really is not hard at all. You dont even have to be a mechanic to do that LOL. And if you want to own one of these cars its a good idea to start working on them yourself or have big pockets to constantly pay someone else to fix it for you. I say dont be afraid to get your hands dirty

I am not afraid of getting dirt. I am used to fix my other car, and my bike.

I Just got the car, and I don't know what is right, and what is wrong. You all know how mechanichs are... If they're wrong, they will charge you too the hour that they lost, cause... Now your car is better than before hehe.

My mechanic has proven to be a good one in the past but he's not cheap. I Just want to be sure he's not loosing time with something that isn't wrong, but he looks so sure my crankshaft moves sideways as it shouldn't... I Am really afraid, cause it's not easy to find a 4g63T block here around... I can find a 4g63, but it's a mess to swap pistons, isn't?

I have tried to look at ebay for Crankshaft pulleys for the Eclipse, but I Can only find billet alumium one's. ¿Wasn't a matter about these pulleys because the stock one has a ballancer inside of it or something alike?

Arbiter, the pulley costs about 140 to 190 euros from the mitsubishi dealer (depending on the dealer, i paid 140 a few years ago)

if they say they cant help you because its an import, tell them you want the Euro spec Pulley..it is the same, as well as about 99% of the other parts.
