OK heres the deal. About 2 months ago my starter just quit on me outta no where. I needed to drive it asap so I just wired in a push button. 2 weeks later the starter died. So I took it in to get rebuilt but they said it was beyond repair. So i just buy another one from them and now 3 weeks later this one is dead 2 :beatentodeath: It melted the wire as if the polarity is reversed or something. So I took it back and they say they wont give me anymore if I'm runnin push button. So now I need to figure out what the problem is. Has this happened to anyone with a push button. I actually checked the wire (black/yellow) to the starter and it seemed like it was rubbed to the metal in a spot. what would that have killed. I turn the key and only hear a click. I have a friend with a ignition but dont wanna do that for no reason. I tried to follow the wire into the car but lost it. could someone tell me where to check under the dash for continuity. Where is the relay and how would i test that? Please help me people :coy:

If the starter worked, then I doubt the push button killed it. Starters work under extreme current environments anyway. The small wire to the solenoid is the one that comes from your key switch. You might check your clutch switch to see if it is ok also. Several things contribute to the starting. Key switch, clutch or neutral safety switch, relay and finally the solenoid which is what engages the starter. Two things kill starters the fastest. Weak batteries being the worst offenders. Next is cranking while engine running. Don't laugh, it happens. An engine that is hard to start and is cranked until the starter gets so hot it starts throwing the solder form the commutator. An alternator that doesn't re-charge the battery which makes for low voltage and hard crank ETC. You could hook a jumper wire straight to the battery to start and it wouldn't hurt if you dis-engaged it when the engine started. I personlly have used push buttons myself and never killed a starter with one. Lastly, check for bad connections. This could be anything from a loose nut to a wire which is bad internally. Leave nothing to chance.
Good Luck

the wire to my starter is black with a yellow stripe. Is the wire this same color from start (the ignition) to finish (the starter)

I would seriously doubt that it stays the same color. Most times when it hits a switch, relay or such it changes color to reflect the change of component it comes from.
