I am NOT happy at all with the 1g dsm. AFTER spending over $100 on a reconditioned ecu (the old one went bad) the car still dies and has a mind of its own. It has more rough starts than before and dies easier when it stalls (the clicking happens and it trickles down to 0 rpms!!!). when i replaced the ecu the car ran good for about 3 hours, no problems, i thought my problem was solved. then this morning i go to get some washers at the hardware store, and the car clicks from the ecu, throws the cel, stalls, then the cel turns off. WTF!!!!!! i checked the ecu when i got it, it was PERFECT with no leakage of the caps, etc. i have no idea what this could be, i already spent 75 bucks on plugs and wires also. i bought the car as my "dependable winter car" for $1800 and now its $2000 and doesnt run. ive noticed that it likes to use coolant?????? i refilled it today and it seemed like the stalling got worse. i dunno maybe its just in my head. this car is posessed! somebody please help me asap!!!!

Check your Alternator/Voltage Regulator / Voltage output when running - got any Power Steering Fluid leaks by chance?

- Start with a new Factory Radiator Cap on the Coolant use...

- BTW my Rebuilt ECU was $400 so God knows what you got for $100 (a new one is $1400 last I heard).

Good Luck...

its got a new alternator, there are no power steering leaks, the ecu came off of the same year model, i bought it from an electronic company through ebaymotors. the eclipse it came form had only 60 k miles and i OPENED it up and looked hard to find problems, its in perfect shape. i wish someone has had this problem before so they could tell me what to do.

ok, so i havent done the alt. test yet, but my car is burning oil very badly. i just changed the oil because i saw blue smoke once and figured it might help to chancge it...... it didnt help. now my car will warm up and shut down... sounds like a bad head gasket to me. also i checked my new plugs to see if there is a rich/lean condition and there is oil on the bottom of the spark plug seal. i want to sell the car badly, but am afraid of not getting what i paid for it 3 weeks ago. i paid $1800, and it has 17" enkei rims with brand new tires, eibach pro kit springs, kyb shocks, tint4d windows, strut bar, k&n, clarion cd, short shifter.... what do you guys think i should do? HELP!!!

Its a dsm. Not dependable, period. I have spent more than 5,000 in less than a year on mine. Get used to it or sell it.

Only if the car hasn't been taken care of, a previous owner can cause the car to turn to crap quite quickly. DSMs can be as reliable as any other car if they are taken care of.

Uhhh..don't bother driving period if you think $200 is expensive. Trust me it could be MUCH worse..i.e. my $6,000 bill from the abuse the car took from the previous owner.

KEEP IN MIND THIS IS MY WINTER CAR!!! i also own a 95 tsi awd that gets stored for the winter, which has NO problems!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM NOT BEING CHEAP!!!!!!!

well if it was doing the oil thing shouldnt you have checked it earlier? well since i know nothing about electricity i would say get a voltage tester and go around and around... and it might be the alt. or the bat. now as for the smoke.. many things can lead to burning oil... now you say it uses a lot of coolant... is it burning it? -.-;;

you have what seems to be a car that is burning coolant and oil... Oil leaks, valve cover gasket, head gasket, plugs, and boost leaks. I dont know what makes a car burn coolant but you might have it checked on. And why dont you go find a ECU from a junkyard >.< push come to shove you can bring it to the devil.... But your car seems to have a lot of problems... but you also received what seems to be some good suspension parts which leads me to think that the previous owner raced it or liked to drive it very fast ALL the time...

the car we are talking about is a 92 non turbo (this screen name is for my 95 tsi, but that is my summer car).. so there is no boost leaks. the ecu HAS already been replaced with a good one. i tried to salvage the old one but it was toast. i got that feeling about th last owner also. i have school and work all the time...17 yrs old and i font have time for it!! im going to squeze in as much time as i can to try and keep it, but if i cant fix it within two weeks its as good as gone. thanks for the replies

Well, thats a lt of parts for only $1800, you should have been suspicious from the start. Good luck though, i once spent 2 days when my 1g was smoking white. After 3 compression test, new plugs/wires, new k&n, new rad cap, new PCV, etc etc etc, I pulled my 255 fuel pump and saw it clogged the fuel screen. Welcome to the world of the first gen. Its not a hobby, its a privlidge.

Just saw it was a non-turbo, I just identified your problem.

I was just wondering why you asked about the power steering fluid leak. I just had my exhaust manifold changed and the mechanic spilled power steering fluid from the pump all over my altenator and anything around in that area. Shortly after a new problem arose with my car. It has nothing to do w/ my altenator though. I will explain in further detail if this can actually cause a problem.
Thanks,
Carol

PS fluid will kill an alternator in no time.
