Mushy shifting...?

I was killing some hillbilly in a truck the other night, when all of a sudden my tranny started feeling really mushy when going in and out of gear... bent fork maybe?... any ideas??

Try the search, you aren't the first person to have shifting problems.

Heh, telling him to search doesn't help much if ya can't start him out with something. I tried a search in the forums on "mushy shifting" and looks like not much coming up, however, I found this:

I'd contact HokieDSM, (about the above thread in the link), and see if a solution was found. I did a search on google for mushy shifting because I remember reading about the dsm mushy shifting issue and had found this kit:
http://www.infobottle.com/ShiftKit/shifter.htm. Not quite sure if this would just be a bandaid in your case for something more mechanical happening but thought I'd share it with you anyways.

Try searching for something other than mushy shifting, the word "mushy" isn't commonly used to describe shifting problems. I could search and come back with dozens of posts of useful information. Go to www.vfaq.com, search these forums, search the dsmtalk forums, search the nabr archives, google it. If he thinks it might a bent fork, try searching for "bent fork", or better yet get under the car and inspect the fork. There are lots of ways to get the information and most of the time looking for it yourself is the fastest way. Everybody should use all available resources before posting a question.

Try using different words to describe the problem, if you don't get any results with "mushy" try something else. If you can come up with a question, 99% of the time it has already been asked and answered a dozen times, it just takes a little effort to find it.


If you really want help, describe the problem with a lot of detail. Does it grind? Does it catch when you try to put it in gear? Does the shifter have an abnormal amount of play in it? What clutch are you using? How many miles are on the clutch? Have you looked at the clutch fork? Have you inspected your shifter cables, shifter assembly, shifter bushings, hydraulics, pedal assembly? Is the clutch adjusted properly? Have you checked the fluid level of the transmission?
