Mount map sensor on (1G) intake manifold?

Hello,

I believe on the 2G intake manifolds there is a machined spot for the "manifold differential pressure sensor" for OBD/emissions stuff, so I was thinking of having some machining done to accept a 'push style' map sensor. But who makes a 1+ BAR MAP in THIS STYLE?

I will be using the map sensor to log boost and my map input can be customized to accept any 0-5V curve so it doesn't have to be a specific make like the GM map sensors.

This would look way clean, especially with a vacuum distribution block you could really simplify that stock intake mani. :cool:

I need at least a 3 bar so it kind of limits things, any advice on how to find one would be awesome I'd really like to try this out.

You do realize the 2g MDP and a MAP are two different sensors, correct?



12580698 (which might have been superseded by 12615136) should be for a 2 bar MAP sensor. Looks to be from a Cobalt SS.

9373269 might work for a 3.3 bar MAP sensor from a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra.

Please verify any part numbers before purchasing to make sure you get the correct part.


Just to throw another mounting option in here, you can see what I did with my 1g manifold on this page. This is using an AEM 5 bar MAP sensor.

Yeah my bad, to clarify:

Have 2g GSX
6 bolt swap/1G intake manifold

Right now, the MDP is hanging off to the side with a vacuum hose attached.

The image I used was just an example showing (the design I'm after) how the pressure sensing port goes into manifold and sensor body bolts to mani, not that very particular one.

I have the ECU+ piggyback and plan to log boost with an appropriate capacity MAP sensor.

Dig the 3.3 bar you suggested. I can find the P/N pretty cheap but are some of the GM map pigtail connectors the same? IE, can I go to a salvage yard and just pick up a pigtail? Because the pigtail is pricey online...

But yeah the idea is I want to mount stock MDP sensor on the 1G intake (like it was on 2G intake) and also mount an added 3.3 bar MAP sensor for boost logging. Maybe future speed density too :D
 
The only way I've seen someone actually mount the MDP on a 1g manifold is to have a portion welded to the top of the manifold like the 2g manifold. There's no easy way that I know of, as most people just ditch it when they do the swap. Or they hang it somewhere and run a vacuum line to it. But if you've gotten rid of your EGR valve, then the MDP sensor is pointless anyway.

I don't know if all GM pigtails are universal. I don't believe I've ever seen anyone use the push-style MAP you posted. Most people go with the typical GM MAP that looks like a box as they're readily available at most junk yards for dirt cheap. If you do try for the 3.3 bar I posted, make sure it's the style you want before ordering. It could be someone confused it with the typical box style GM MAP.
 
I would not worry about mounting a map directly to the mani. Your asking for leaks that way. Just make a bracket and mount it somewhere and tap a vac line from the mani to it. If your going to have the mani off anyway, just drill and tap an NPT fitting into it. Plug it into your map, and boom, done. You can NPT to barb ideally. And just run small vac line to it. Nothing to hard. Just remember to keep it simple.
 
When I get home tonight I'll take a pic and post it here. I had my intake manifold machined to fit the stock 2G MDP sensor, that way if I ever wanted to get away from the OmniPower 4-bar MAP, I can switch back easily.
 
Yeah man any info on how you mounted it, that would be cool. I don't have a lot of experience in welding but I figured I could pile up a big weld on top of manifold, machine the top of weld flat (not sure how?) Then drill a hole for sensor and two holes for bolts.

Does a machine shop have a fixture to machine the weld flat? That's what I was unsure about mainly

I keep forgetting to get this pic for you. For now, I can describe how it was done. I had a local shop weld an aluminum plate on the manifold, then had a machine shop use my old MDP sensor as a guide and just drill the holes in the welded plate. It was actually REALLY simple, so if it sounds complicated, you might be over-thinking it. I'll try to get a pic so you can get a good visual.
 
That is a much easier route, sometimes I wonder how I didn't see that first :coy:

I bet you could even hold a chunk of aluminum or thick plate in a vise and drill the holes and whatnot first. Then just drill an appropriate sized hole in manifold, and lastly weld the aluminum plate/chunk on.

I really should get this done soon. I think I'll buy a spare IM so I don't have downtime with the IM off the car. Really dislike seeing all of the vacuum hoses runnin around too

I really wouldn't do that. It was just too easy to have the plate welded first, then have the machine shop drill the holes using their mill/drill press.
