Has anybody moded the stock muffler to flow better, and still be stock?I read something about opening it up and using 3 inch pipe for straight through flow..But then the two tips that come out are very small, and will hinder performance..

Does anyone know anything about doing this?

I know I don't have stock muffler, but I do have one laying around..
Thanks!!:thumb:

I would imagine more hassle then its worth. Either run a dump with the stock muffler or a couple aftermarket companies make mufflers that can be setup to almost look identical to stock, but with all the flow advantages.

Yes, there are some companies that make "like stock" mufflers. I wouldn't bother with it though, just run a 3" + back.

Hey thanks for the responses guys....I think you guys are missing the point here..Let me explain..I want to modify the muffler to be "stock" appearing and still provide great flow...Now..The reason for doing this is really for something to do. And so I can take off my huge muffler, and appear more stock without spending any coin..I just want to see if it's possible to make the stock muffler perform nice, like my muffler now..

gut the stock cat, that's about the only most restrictive part i can think there is.

Test pipe already installed (Cat delete in profile if you read that 1st)..

Bud, why would you want to put the stock muffler back on?
You could just put back on the stock muffler tip.

The stock tips, the two tip muffler..I'm not cutting my tip, and welding on the 2 tip thing if that's what you mean.. Ohh cut the muffler off and weld on the tip..Yeah thats going to be really freaking loud..My car is pretty quiet already( at low rpms)..No need to make it loud..

Thanks Nick!!:thumb:

Thats was a cool exhaust you did back in the day dsmunknown. Guy here once cut out his stock muffler and welded a 3" pipe right through the middle. Kind of cool. We have an issue with exhuast tickets here.

Gutting a stock cat will actually make it flow worse.

Justt get a turbo back setup with 2 resonators and a muffler. Magnaflo makes some "stock appearing" mufflers that are 3" or 2.5" in and dual 2.5" or 2 1/4" out.

ive never gutted a cat so it was just an idea i seen some others do, i just removed the entire exhaust and exit right at the drivers wheel.

Not missing the point at all ;) but you forgot to mention you didn't want to spend any coin :p

My exhaust is all aftermarket & I made it to replicate the stock exhaust as close as I could (though this isn't the free route) I don't have any current pics uploaded but I've had other DSMer's not even realise it was an aftermarket exhaust, its that close to stock. Everything is the same as stock as far as tip size, spacing, rolled, angle, stagered placement. Only difference that can be noticed is the muffler cannister is slightly smaller vs a stocker but most won't pick up on that unless the specifically know DSM mufflers.

As for the free route, not sure about 1g mufflers but 2g's are single in that diverts to two straight through cores. Only difference vs aftermarket is the internals are much smaller. So if you could somehow replace the internals with larger aftermarket ones (would still cost money & how would you get just louvered internals?), you'll see the extra flow advantages.

I don't know about the retail prices but even still you could probably piece together a setup like mine (all Vibrant components) for well less then $200 & save yourself alot of work.

Well see me and my buddy were siting at home chilling. He was wondering about buying headers and exhaust for his 72 dodge dart..Then we got to thinking, why half ass it when you can do it right...Or why buy the stuff when you can make it for a 3rd of the price..Ya sorry I forgot to mention I didn't want to spend coin, but I figured it would be obvious since I already have a very nice flowing muffler and such..I'm planning on doing a 2.5 inch turbo back(eventually)Or 3 inch with external gate...Eventually I add one more time...Ha ha.

Then we decided we would go in together for mig/tig welder and tube bender and such, and make our own stuff, and save tons of coin.. My buddy is not trained in any of that, but I just happend to be trained in all of the above..But we will not get any of the equipment we need toll probly winter at least, so for now a nice project that is SEMI-free and will work better or just as good as my straight through muffler I have now..
This modding stock muffler is the half ass job that i'm talking about..Gives me something to do for the time being..

Daren- everytime I see you muffler I get excited, because it does look stock appearing if you didn't know the differemce...And it looks just wonderful..I could have sworn I've seen pics on the install before, but it wouldn't hurt to see them again, whenever you find the pics..

Thanks again!!!

Bud

Ya your right I did post a pick or two (saw there's actually one in Anthony's thread linked above), just none in the gallery. I really need to get some updated photos of the car just in general as there's been a good number of changes since my last pics, just never get around to that.

The other nice thing about the Vibrant mufflers is the case is even end joint rolled like our stocker (alot of other aftermarket are different). If you ever descide to take the easy way out, I would defently recommend the Vibrant products to you :thumb:

Well thanks for the info, and the great review of the Vibrant products..I'll definatly remember that, If I do decide to go the spending coin route and buy it from our supporting vendors..

I modified a factory 2g. Opened up the inlet and ran straight 3" out one tip with a qtp cutout in it. Then packed the other side with more muffler filling and left the smallopening and looped pipe to the other tip. So when the qtp is closed exhaust goes through the small opening (quieter) but when the valve is open you have a regular 3" exhaust.

Daren, do you remember what part numbers for the vibrant mufflers/tips you used ? I'll be picking up a 2g soon and I'd like to throw an exhaust on, but keep it stock appearing.

I like the fact that you use aftermarket pieces, but retain that stock look.

Hey man you got any pictures of how you did this. Thanks

Muffler is #1111, Universal 3" in dual 2.5" out.
Tips are # 1503, Bolt on 3" tips

Tips are the cheesy screw on type but their the only ones I could find that were basically an exact copy of stock & had all the correct measurements I required. The inlet size is 2.25", so I just chopped the ends off at the point where the tips expand, to give me the 2.5" required inlet size & lose the set screws so the tips are just welded on.

No, the QTP ended up sitting too tall and hitting the floorboards of the trunk. I was about to cut a hole in the floor panel to allow the cutout to fit when I found a similar product from New Zealand.

I already hacked out the QTP from the cutout, but I might be able to find the muffler I used in the scrap barrel.

I'll start a new thread with the new muffler I picked up that in essence does the same thing I made, but fits better under the car.

I will have to find pictures of it bolted on, it looks like big tips with the muffler off but it looks almost factory, just maybe a bit more agressive. Looks gorgeous on the car..actually selling it too. Ill get pictures of it on a car in a sec here. This is all welded and even has the tips "staggered" to flow with the bumper like stock.
