Missing O2 Sensor?

My Mechanic says my O2 sensor is missing... I haven't noticed anything weird in the car as far as idle or anything... Is that possible... to run the car without comlplications and not have an O2 sensor?

It depends which o2 sensor. If it's the upstream o2 sensor (on the o2 sensor housing near the turbo) then it will affect your fuel trims. This will lead to things like bad gas mileage and incorrect a/f ratios. So if this sensor is dead then replace it!

If it's the downstream o2 sensor (after the catalytic converter) you don't need it. It's only there to determine if your catalytic converter is working. You may however throw a CEL from not having this sensor.

And if you're actually missing an o2 sensor from where it screws into the exhaust pipe or o2 housing you would know since your car would be pretty loud from the hole in the exhaust, unless someone plugged it up with something.

Opps, you're right, I get mixed up between the two

Anyways look under your hood and find the downpipe. Then go up from that and it connects the the o2 housing which connects to the turbo. On the o2 housing there should be a sensor on the side which is screwed into the o2 housing. If you see a sensor in there then you have an o2 sensor. If by chance the mechanic meant "missing" as not working then follow the wires coming out of the o2 sensor and above the transmission on the passenger side of the engine there should be a harness where the o2 sensor plugs in. If it's plugged in you can test the o2 sensor. One way to test it is with a datalogger. If you have one hook it up and make sure the sensor's voltage cycles. If you don't have a datalogger you can check the o2 sensor voltage from underneath the passenger dash. Remove the passenger kick panel and then look up and you'll see a wiring harness. On that harness there will be a single wire with a harness on the end. Use a voltmeter to test the voltage. Below is a picture of the location... So in a 1G the only effect I would have would be the CEL?

On this first link you can see the O2 sensor plug that was mention earlier. Look there to see if it is missing an imput or if the wires are just torn off. It is between compressor outlet pipe and the wastegate signal hose.

Without it you car will get horrible gas milage and the car will run kinda crappy.
