So I picked up a used 7-bolt motor from a 95 GSX for my wife's 98 GSX.

The previous owner has recently done the timing belt and replaced the water pump and all the timing components. He didn't remove the BS, but cut the belt. So before putting this in the car, I plan to do the BS eliminator correctly.

Now he recommends that I replace the head gasket since it has not been done. It has about 150,xxx on the clock. I did a compression test before removing the motor and it was 180psi across. Which is great, where it should be.

I guess the question is should I replace the head gasket? I see alot of coolant and crap around the base of the head where it meets the block. It could be from the valve cover or over flow from the coolant fill up... Are there any other test I should do to see if I SHOULD do the head gasket, Leak down test? My fear is if I remove the head I could affect the compression and it won't be 180psi across anymore. Am I just being stupid?

I don't plan to run a turbo bigger then an EVO16G

So what kind of head gasket I should go with? I don't plan on getting it machined, just cleaned up at home.

Could I get some recommendations or tips on what I should do to prep the head and block surfaces for the new head gasket? Should I go with Mitsu MLS? or just Composite?
I also have an extra set of ARP Head studs for a 6-Bolt. Can I use it on this 7-Bolt?

Any advice would be appreciated!

6 bolt head studs wont fit a 7bolt, but i would do a head gasket while the motor is out. Nothing is going to change on the compression if you do it right, and just a oem head gasket will work fine.

I've used the OEM composite on my few rebuilds. I recommend it especially if no machine work will be involved, just be sure to take your time getting all the old gasket material off.
