Milage Question on my 98 gsx for sale.

Hey, I have a 1998 eclipse gsx for sale in Connecticut. The car had about 58k miles on it, when i bought it. Around 78k miles on the odometer, i "tried" putting these ghetto gauge covers over my gauges, ended up accidentally touching the needles, which left ONLY the speedometer working. I ended up taking it to a garage and they swapped out the whole gauge cluster with one from a junk yard, that had 134k miles on it. Never even thought about the mileage difference when i did this. Well anyway, now i wanna sell my car and i have no idea how to prove the real mileage. I'm obviously going to get a lot less for a gsx with 134k miles, rather than the REAL 78k.

When a car is inspected the mileage is written down. Run a carfax report on your car, it should show the whole mileage history. You should be able to point to the year when the cluster was changed.

Well, find out how many miles were put on the new gauge cluster. so subtract 134k miles from your current mileage. then add that number you just got to the mileage of the old cluster when you took it out. and there it is.

Example. say your odometer shows 154k miles right now. subtract the 134k and you end up with 20k miles since you changed cluster. now add 20k to the old cluster. so, 78k+20K=90K that your car REALLY has.

That doesn't prove anything to the prospective buyer. He needs to show that it truly has the lesser amount.

True. Unless the person is willing to take your word for it. But it is a way to get the actual mileage.
