mesh grill material and mounting? [Merged 2-7]

Okay, I was wondering if anyone has ever put mesh on the front bumper of the 95-96 Eclipses? In particular I mean the absolute center between where the fogs are. Would it be really difficult to do? I am tired of looking at the big gap right there.

No its easy just take off your bumper first, unless your car is high enough to where you can get under it.

My black mesh is held on by black zip ties. You can't see the zip ties. Just jack up the car (and use jackstands too of course so car doesn't fall on you), and look for places to zip tie to. Easy.

if your getting pre fit ones actually for your car, it is pretty simple and self explanitory, i think some even come with instalation instructions.
if your just buying the $40 apc mesh from pep boys get your diagnol cutters and a lot of zip ties and you should get the idea from there

In my opinion the Grill Craft kit is the best thing out there. The grills are very sturdy and are VERY HIGH QUALITY. They're pretty pricey if you buy it directly from them but I scored mine for way less on Ebay.... and people despise Ebay around here . Came with all mounting hardware and really good instructions.

What is despised is the ripoff shit that some vendors carry on eBay. If you're a savvy shopper and know what you're looking for, eBay can be of great value. The danger of an unethical seller always lurks, but you have to weigh your options.

usually its made out of an aluminum or steel. You can check Home Depot they might have it. If not go to McMastercarr.com. Type in mesh grill and then change the specs. You can chose from material to the size of the diamond shape. Fairly cheap.

A lot of people I know go to Home Depot and buy the wire gutter covers. These are cheap. The only problem is that sometimes they are not wide enough to cover the entire gap on the bumper. But for the smaller side holes, it works great!

The only place to get the mesh grill around here is at Pepboys in their tuner section. It is very expensive. I tried the Gutter covers at Home Depot, they work well. I didn't think about McMasterCarr.

I re-did the grill on my eclipse recently amidst other work. I found expanded aluminum mesh at Home Depot in large sheets, maybe 4ft. x 8ft. They weren't stored very well and while somewhat stiff still easily bendable and the storage somewhat warped the sheets. I had to find select spots in the mesh that were relatively "lined up" to cut my portions from. I then spray painted them with multiple coats using black gloss spray paint and installed on my car.

I don't have pictures yet as i just did this and the car is elsewhere getting some intercooler damage welded up. I found my solution to be ok but not ideal. Here's why:

1) mesh really isn't that stiff. Anyone pushing on it in the wrong way or perhaps a nice rock could bend it up and I really wouldn't be able to restore it to its original shape, meaning I'd have to cut a new replacement. I'd consider the mesh on my EVO the proper stiffness but I have never found comparable mesh.

2) Spray paint alone just doesn't cut it. It chips off pretty easily and I can tell already that I'll be touching it up a lot. Have to find some other way to coat it so the paint adheres and holds even with small impacts from bugs/rocks/etc. I thought about plasti-dip but I didn't have a quick solution to how the hell I'd dip the grills in it and then a way to dry it

I do however like the general look I got with this mesh. I previously had used a plastic mesh I found in Home Depot's home and garden section used for fencing off trees and stuff. I just turned it at an angle and cut the rectangles I needed out, then made a metal frame out of stereo back strapping for keeping it taut. Over time however it loosened up and looked flimsy. Also the plastic faded slightly over time.

The only alternative to what I've done that I considered was some mesh I'd seen for sale from a vendor on ebay. I unfortunately don't recall the seller's name or any keywords as I forgot the option when I decided to try the Home Depot aluminum mesh.

This particular sheet probably has about 40% open area though, so I wouldn't use that in front of something that needs good air flow.

i boght one of those "kits" once online...all i got was a small roll of gutter guard and a few zip ties.

If you have the cash then I would say to go with GrilleCraft. Not only is it sturdy, but it's top quality stuff and is powdercoated. Only downside is the price unless you can get it for a steal like I did.

why not flebay..? i couldn't find the hight and width i needed in town so i went on ebay got a honeycomb style one and it's nice and sturdy for 10 shipped and packaged nice too! as for the ones who claim it chips, I primered mine then painted gloss black and used the clear coat you find for rims! it holds much better then paint alone not to mention its chemical resistant and easily cleaned another note the kit came with the usual zip ties but also a rubber garment to go around the outer edge of the mesh that you cut to prevent scratches.
