Mechanical guage runs the source right to the gauge. IE: Mech. boost gauge runs the vac line inside your car to the back of the gauge, thus telling you what PSI your running. A electric boost gauge uses a sender unit under the hood, that sends an electrical readout to your gauge. And full sweep gauges usually do 'neat' things when turned on, the needle goes all the way across the gauge and back. I beleive this is usually used to run a self diagnostic on the gauge, to ensure its functioning properly.:thumb:
