My mods are in profile and want to know how much boost would be safe to run on with stock head studs and with e316g. Yes I will be logging for knock.:thumb:

Is that a safe margin or is it pushing it to close for comfort.. at 18-20

18 is the safe margin and 20 could be too as long as you don't keep launching it at every light you stop at.

How will launching affect the head studs?

It all depends on how safe your tune is and what you have to tune/monitor vital parameters. I've never had a DSM with upgraded head studs or even the head gasket yet (2 92s now) and over the many years (since 95) have been to the track running 25psi on race gas more times than I can count and never had an issue. I'm currently running 27psi on the street with a 50/50 mix of E85 and not having any problems. I run fairly conservative timing, though.

Do I recommend this for everyone, no. I constantly watch for knock and have direct control over timing and fuel through my eprom chips. I also don't make crazy top speed runs in 5th gear at full tilt just in case, though I do run the car pretty hard. Don't know if it matters with the 93+ cars having 11mm studs vs 12mm for the 90-92s, but figured I'd post my experience. Oh, and my DSM isn't my daily driver, so I'm not as concerned as well. :)

Well I'm going to watch my knock...Can someone point my in the direction in tuning with a afc 1 controller the original silver with blue screen Ive read several others and don't understand an ounce of it. My correction is still at -18% should I change this?

I am running e85 and running around 28-30psi on my evo3 with stock block including head studs and gasket. I watch for knock good and the car is not a daily. It is set for 19* timing.

So ill be safe around 20 as long as I watch the knock?

The stock 6-bolt head bolts are 1mm larger than the "torque to yield" 7bolt head bolts. He has a 6-bolt. They are far stronger than people give them credit. I've pushed them to 25psi as a daily driver with my tdo5h 18g. Saw over 40lb/min, before knock took it all away. If you have minimal to no knock, you will be fine up to 400whp with stock 6-bolt head bolts. It's not about boost (it usually never is), it is about cylinder pressure.

. . . EDIT: your screen name threw me for a loop. . . What is your hp goal?

Well I don't have a hp goal I have a 1/4 mile goal of a 12.5 or a 12 flat.

6 bolt head studs work great, Ive used mine over and over and no blown head gaskets from running to much boost yet. I have stockers in right now and I'm seeing over 30psi on my 16g. My brother has stockers and he is running 28psi. My buddy has stockers and he is running 22psi. Me and my bro are seeing 22-24* and my buddy is at 20* timing. So cylinder pressures are high and we are doing just fine.

It has been argued many times that the stock 1g studs are better than normal Arp studs. They have seen well over 700hp with a stock gasket and no issues. You just need to steer clear of knock as this generates very very high cylinder pressures that will stretch the stock studs or kill your head gasket.

Its been argued they are just as good as ARP's and dont stretch also.

I don't have any AFC advice.

My expierience with stock 7 bolt head studs and gasket was that I ran 20psi for two years and made almost 300 AWHP. I made a 1/4 mile pass at 22.5psi on 91 octane whil it was about 95 degrees out and the head gasket let go. It was fine until I pushed the limit of what our crappy California gas can do and got owned by knock.

Man I love e85, dont have to worry about crappy gas. LOL. My mechanic is pushing his 16g to around 45psi and he still gets no knock on e85 and that turbo is way out of its efficiency range, making a lot of hot air. His air to water intercooler cools the air down real well though. He made noticeable power when he went from 30psi to 40psi. Just got to keep the air cool.

OP - These sites are the first place to look for AFC setup and tuning info:

Apexi Super AFC For The Eclipse/EVO (follow the link on this page to the next RRE page, too)
DSM Piggyback Tuning

Otherwise, anything that a member here named "spyderturbo007" says about afc's is worth a read. He knows them inside and out, and has filled numerous threads with good info.

This guy has a 7-bolt.

45psiWTF I did not even think that was possible. The highest I have had mine was 33psi and it did not like it very much. 29-30psi it seems pretty happy at. I would be interested in a log at 45psi on a 16g did not think it was possible.
