mating auto tranny to block.

Hey i just tryed mating my engine and transmission together and i found that the pilot depth on the crank is 9.29mm and the pilot on the torque converter is 18.00mm.. what gives is it not suppost to go all the way on?

i know on the 5speed turbo trannys there is no pilot, just the splines for the clutch
