This all began about 2 weeks ago and has progressively been getting more frequent and worse, and occurs after the car warms up. I have an error code 22(cam angle sensor). My car misfires and backfires and while this is occuring, my tach is going crazy. If this happens while im at highway speed and it leads to a engine stall, I will have no signal at the tach even though the engine is still rotating and all other electrical systems are operational. Also, if I try to start the car immediatly after this happens, the engine will crank but the rpms will stay at zero and it wont start.

I am thinking that this is my CAS on its way out. But some people have said that this could be a ISC. I replaced my caps on my ECU about 2 years ago as a preventative measure(ie: no clicking or leaking yet). I also replaced the coil packs about a year ago.

1. If the CAS is bad, will that give a faulty(crazy bouncing around) rpm signal even though the rpm signal is produced at the coil?

2. If I need a new CAS, i would rather get a new one, or reconditioned one as opposed to used. Where can I find one for cheap?
thanks guys

sounds like you know where to begin the most obvious,

reconditioned vs new vs junkyard

you like mcdonalds or burger king

same arguement its preference, all will work according to manufacturers spec, and you have a chance on getting a bad one no matter where you go

then one person will be like well blah blah i had a bad experience with this one from here, then another person will be like blah blah the place where i got the one the other guy said it was awesome for him was bad for me. blah blah

do youself a favor and try the cheapest route first

The ECU has to fire the plugs to generate a signal to the tach but it won't fire the plug if it doesn't see the CAS signal giving it timing information.

The power transistor/ignitor will also cause the same problems. That can be found on the back driver side of the engine just below the coil packs. First, try unplugging it and the cas and reconnect them to make sure you have a good connection. Do you have a friend with a 1g that you can swap these parts from to check? That way, you will know if one or the other cure your problem before you start spending money.

It did on my car once upon a time due to a poor connection. I even still have the spare cas that I purchased because of the code 22.

yeah, but did you have all the symptoms as me?

i had the same issue with my n/a, it happened to be the ecu. i replaced the capacitors and nothing, then i popped the top off the ecu one more time and looked under the metal bracket/brace and one of the orange capacitors was leaking. I got a ecu from junk yard and put it in and ran perfect. Mine was doing the same thing, firing 2 cylinders after it warmed up, check that. by the way i got no CEL what so ever. but check that and the voltage on the CAS also but the computer first. good luck!
