Dawson Creek,
How bad would it be to leave the bottom FAR left stud broken in there? I realise in time I would need to get a new head but for a temporary fix would this be ok? It was running good before and it was missing 2 of them. One is fixed now but the other...well lets just not talk about it:mad:

You don't have to get a new head. It can be drilled out and retapped.

As for how efficient it will be..For alittle bit you will be fine, but over time since that corner of the manifold is not being pushed against the head, those hot exhaust gasses will get to it and eventually burn a channel through the gasket causing a rather large exhaust leak and decrease in spool up time and over all performance.

it looks like it might be going into the side of the whole a bit? is that super bad and I should start looking for a new head now? Could i just fill it with JB weld and in time get a new head? how much larger could I drill and retap the hole?

Hmm well then I should be ok to just leave it for now. And when time comes get a stage 1 or 2 slowboy head when I get my FFWD 264/272 cams. TSI, were you getting any weird numbers when you were running with it broken. Anyone else out there running witt a broken stud, or no stud at all?

Hmm, well my mom is going to talk to some mechs. at her work and see what they think. If the whole is to messed up then a new head will be needed in time. but im pretty sure im just going ot leave it for the time being

...Hole..no W.

Sorry..it was bothering me :D

LOL...I wrote that while watching TV / thinking about my talon so my mind was else where. Well here is my plan. Leave it for now. Unless im told some good news from the mechs at my moms work. Then sometime this summer get SBR's stage one head, eagle rods, topline pistons, and a remaned crank.

Is your exhaust manifold removed, as you deal with this issue? Just wondering because it looked bad for me with two broken studs, but when I removed the manifold, I found just enough material sticking out to grab with vice grips and unscrew.

Yes the manifold is off, LOL like I would try and fix it with it on. How much larger can I really drill the hole though? Is there a chance of going through into the head from the sides?

Just get a helicoil kit for i believe on a 1g it's 10mm (someone correct me if im wrong). OR you could just get an extractor kit and drill a hole down the middle of the stud and back it out. That way you don't have to worry about drilling into your head and messing up water jackets. But you DO NOT need to go out and waste money on a whole new head because of one broken stud. Hell, I'm running on 3 broken ones on mine (doesn't spool too well) but i'm not going to waste 8-900 bucks for an sbr head when i could fix it myself with an extractor kit.

Heli-coil your head. I had to do mine. You can get a heli-coil kit from Napa. Just bring them what's left of the old bolt.

Ok, just drill out the center of the bolt so there is a very thin tube with threads on it left in the hole. Then just use a welders pic to clean out most of the old bolt from the threads. Then re-tap the bolt hole with the same pitch and diamiter tap. This will just clean out the remanider of the left over bolt.
The helicoil should be a last resort, they can be leaky or cause leaks. Man I've said this to many tims. LOL

OMG, you have to read the whole post. The drill went of course and is not throgh the threads a bit. I was trying to use the extractor method now that is out of the picture. and I am told that using a Heli coil wont work.

So just clean up what threads didn't come out with a tap thats the right pitch and dia. You were told that already. This isn't rocket science man, there's a big write-up on it in the tech articles and i MAINTAIN you will NOT need a whole new head because of one stud.

I haven't had problems with my heli-coil.
Ive had trouble in the past. There is one in our '71 f250 and it loosend and caused a small exhaust leak. The flames from leak ate away at the cast iron manifold and now im having a hard time finding a good one.
So maybe im just unlucky.
