making an 1100 mile trip! how should i prepare???

ive had this car for about 2 and a half monthes now... here is everything ive done to it, i t was completely stock before i got it!

new street performance (autozone) clutch

new altinator

new radiator and fluid

new exhaust mainifold and gaskets

replaced o2 housing gasket while it was all apart (no cracks in the turbo housing)

new 3 inch downpipe and 3 inch exhaust

2.5 upper intercooler pipe

new NGK plugs and wires

changed oil and filter when i first got it

4 new tires

new ECU

BCS mod, MAF (honeycomb) mod, and a autometer boost gauge

ok i think thats it, im just really paraniod because the car has 161,000 miles but everything seems to work perfectly and she runs/sounds like a champ

the guy i bought it from told me the timing was just recently redone with new belt too and stock turbo was replaced recently

im gonna go ahead and change the oil and filter one more time before i go, what type of oil and filter should i use and what else should i do or check before i leave.... this is my baby and ive invested almost 2k in it in 2 monthes so i dont want anything to happen.... any answers appreciated, thanks

Oil change and and check your fluids. Other than that, you really shouldn't have a problem.
I drove my car 5000 miles in the last 2 months. Most weekends see 500-600 miles.

Did I mention my car is about to roll over 229,000 miles? I'd have no qualms driving cross country in it.

I've used Napa Gold on the two different cars I owned 98 GST Spyder and my current 99 and I have no complaints just no FRAM filter, I've read multiple threads and forums that have spoken negatively about them.

Take a cell phone and a GPS receiver just in case. On the first long road trip after the stroker conversion I made a wrong turn and spent a couple of hours going the right general direction worried about calling AAA for help and having them ask an embarrassing question like ... Where are you?

The Talon has 191,000 miles on it now and is still reliable, fun transportation. Enjoy.

also ill hit like 12 lbs of boost but it wont hold it at high rpm it falls to like 10 lbs..... and yes i have done plenty of boost leak tests, anybody know what this could be?

You are still running the stock boost controller. You could try a MBC and see if it still happens.

With any car be prepared, just be prepared for anything, because anything can go wrong even with many things replaced. Have some way to tow it somewhere in case it does, and our cars arent as new so getting parts for it may take a few days depending on what breaks. Had my dsm broke down twice had to tow it home from school thanks to mom and dad. From now on im prepared for that or ready to rent.

A 14b should be able to hold 12psi to red line.


And I don't know why all of you are so worried. Don't you drive thousands of miles between having to work on your car? I usually can. If not, it's because I'm upgrading stuff, or routine maintenance (oil, brakes, etc.).

If someone was paying for gas and I didn't have classes to go to, I'd drive out to CA just to show you guys.
I can understand if you're running a track-only type car that's running on the ragged edge, but it seems he's taking his DD out on a nice vacation.

AAA- for 100 bucks a year they will give you up to 100 miles of towing or i believe to the closest shop (if the closest shop happens to be over 100 miles away). DEF WORTH IT. Its the first thing i bought when i got my DSM.

I have it just in case. They give you free maps, too if still use those things.

im not going on a vacation or anything.... i am actually moving to nebraska! and i cant afford to tow it! ive checked it all out and including gas and everything its just rediculously expensive... i forgot to menchin i did the brake pads and re blead the breaks too...

im just gonna change the oil once more and pray it makes it ok... not only do i want to make it, but i want it to be the same condition it is in now when i get there.

just wish me luck, now what about the boost issue?.. what is a mbc? i was told by a friend that i should get a boost controller because my wastegate wont stay open or something?... anybody know exactly what he means by this?

oh im sorry. MBC must mean manual boost controller...

yeah ill be bringing alot of tools... just cause im bringing everything i own pretty much.... the car will be cramed.... thats why its so risky... if it were to break down on one of the long stretches of nothing idk what i would do cause i will have all my tools and car parts xbox 360 all my games, clothes i mean alot of very valuble shit basicly everything i have


and we all know how easy it is to break into a 1g

When I moved from Pittsburgh out to State College (about 250 miles each way, drove back and forth twice in one weekend) I actually took the passenger seat out so I could fit more. Driving through the mountains was fun.

Get a bike rack and a bike so you have alternative transportation when she lets you down.

1. Make sure rims and spare tyre in good order never know when you going to need it.
2. You have been worrying mostly about engine(mileage) but u need to realize that front end etc.. could play a role so make sure that major bits are fine.
3. Get the car inspected if u can. If not you look through as much as you can(you may have a lower radiator hose that need changing etc...) U never know when it will go bad.
4. Carry some of your favourite or new MUSIC... Driving that far will get dull at certain points.
5. RED BULL kidding but make sure you up to it because driving those distancing can be tolling on the body esp. if you not getting enough sleep.

I wouldn't worry so much. Most cars drive 3000 harder miles than that between oil changes. A mellow ride on the interstate isn't all that daunting really. It seems like a long way, but you probably beat it around town about twice that distance in the two months you've owned it. Has it been breaking down a lot?

Change the oil, fill the tank, and you'll be fine
