Ok so while doing my FMIC I removed my front bumper and decided it was time for a touch up. Sand, primer, paint, and repair some damage from years of road use.

While doing so and waiting for the primer to dry I wondered what I could do to spruce up the front a bit...give it some POP. Thats when it hit me.... a lit up DSM emblem would be awesome. Now Im sure that its been done before and after some research I didnt find anything about it, I figured I would give it a shot.......

First I used a sharp razor knife and cut out the emblem. Go slow and the diamonds come out great. The pumper cuts easy with a good knife.

Now earler I had shopped around and having done work with acrylic sheets previously I knew that would work well. Hobby Lobby and such have sheets of stuff like that and unfortunately they were all clear and that wont work. So I bought a picture album I found there that had covers made of frosted acrylic. Perfect.
Off to an auto parts store to look for lighting. The flexible strip led light work great. You want the 24inch or longer ones. I chose white.

I traced the DSM emblem and got the size I needed then drilled three holes, one at each tip of the diamond on the bumper. Around a 1/4 inch off each point.
Then traced those holes onto two pieces of the frosted sheeting and drilled those out too.
Now my dilemma was to figure out how to get the lights to stay in there and lght up the emblem good also. What I did was make a circle with the light strip with the lights facing in and wrapped them around the three small bolts that would be the bumper. Made that circle tight and it formed a loose triangle that matched the cutouts perfectly. Then placing one piece of sheeting over the hole on the back side of the bumper then the lights and lastly the other sheet making a tight sandwich that the lights couldn't move around in.

    Worked great.

Still have to wire everything up and finish the bumper but all in all, so far so good.
Probably will splice onto the side marker lights since they are low volt...
    Well thats it for now.

I LOVE it. Not something I would drive with, but hooked up to a keyless entry or just as a park light would be awesome!

Need a picture shot with the headlights on. I like it, although I'm unsure of the cleanliness of it during the day time.

Throw some "nightshades" over top of the emblem. Light would shine through and look decent during the day.

Just wire it up to the interior lights! Go to the mall at night, open your door and BOOM :sneaky:

That looks nice. Wonder if a talon emblem could be pulled off, cleanly.

It's hilarious that you guys like this but then when someone gives their car an underglow you are all like, "OMG take off the neon lights!"

Anyways, I think it would have been awesome if you had just done an outline of the emblem and not cut the whole piece out completely. You could have just left three small "tabs" to hold it on by not cutting the tips of each diamond. IDK maybe that wouldn't look too great...

    I like this though, I just think it's a a little much.

Lol, underglow is good for when you're parked at a show/meet imo. I used to drive with mine just to get it out of my system while i was ahead. I love lights, so I just got fancy flashing interior lights. I hope he tries the nightshades, I think that would make it look awesome.

Whats hilarious is that street glow lights and all that neon , is something that anyone can do on any car...this is specific to dsm. And honestly , I didn't really know how would turn out. But I will say it turned out much better than I thought and with some tweaking could really clean up nicely.
Maybe when you do it, you can cut out the outline but then again you're too cool for all that neon.

Haha I like it. Too bad I haven't been to the mall in like 7 years. I really need to get out more.....

Instead of nightshade, you could try using window tint. The nightshade may run on the acrylic, plus with tint you could choose the darkness of it easier. At first I thought this was going to be terrible, but it looks good at night, although to bright for my preference. I also like the idea of it being wired in with a keyless entry, or interior light. Hope it looks good in the day time is one of my bigger cons of this.

The other thing you can do is give the acrylic a coat of clear spray paint like a wheel clear and do the night shades over that. Seems like night shade sometimes reacts funny with different plastics.

I like the idea of the emblem lighting up with the interior just for something different. I tend to like the "looks stock" look better but even my car has the tarantula mod were when I hit the brakes the Talon on the back has a lighted outline.

96dsm steve I had thought of doing something similar to mine. I guess you just carefully scrapped the coating in the emblem to get to the clear plastic then just stuck an led under it? When does yours light up?

I think this is a cool little mod.

Nothing wrong with driving with this on. I'd be tempted to somehow make one for the rear as well.

It was a picture I got from online I'm going to try to figure a write up on it. The emblem looks like a light is behind it but it's a reflection.

Depends on the color of the light and the state you live in.

This looks like blue, which would be illegal in a lot of states.
