Hey I was wondering what you guys thought was a better investment if I had about $600 to spend, A Magnus Intake Manifold or a set of HKS 272 cams???

For those of you guys who have any of these, what were the side effects, if any, in power? Will I lose a significant amount of power in the lower RPMs with either? Will I have to redline higher to get the most power? what do most of you redline at?

Any one of those would be a great investment to get. But in the end I saw you live in cali and when you do emissions It will be a pain in the butt trying to pass with the 272's. But then again I dont live in cali so maybe someone else can chime in on this

well first off, what kinda setup are you using this with? are you looking for top end power or mid range? either one is a good investment, but i would consider other mods if you haven't already done so. you should check out the intake manifold tests that were done a few months back, also there was a review on dsmtalk as far as what cams would best suit your needs.

You should update your vehicle profile before asking questions like this or tell everyone what your 'current' mods are in the post.

Looks stock to me. If thats the case you should spend (not invest) your $600 on other mods first.

Cams.. all the way. I did HKS cams and did well on my stock motor. You also need a turbo that can support the cams and a good way of tuning your car... Nothing smaller then a 20G. 16G's will not be able to keep up with the 272's and you will not see much. IMO the 2G mainold is just as good as the magnus. I'm not going into any more detail then that.

Mike

Oh sorry about that. My mods are:
ported 20G turbo
ported 2g manifold with Deltagate ext. WG
ported O2 housing with full 3 in exhaust
2G mas with intake
Spearco FMIC kit with piping
780cc injectors
255 fuel pump
AFC of course
act 2600lb
9:1 JE pistons
Eagle Rods
No balance shafts
non-ported head with Crower springs, titanium retainers, SS valves, stock CAMS.
Stock Intake Manifold

all this on my 1990 Talon AWD

So basically I was thinking of upgrading one of those 2 thing because they are still stock. So now what do you guys suggest??? thanks

cams. the stock manifold is better than the stock cams. Besides magnus manifold prices are going up so youll need more than 600$ unless u find 1 used or a good deal before they go up =P

Straight Line Specialties still has them brand new for $600.

if the mani is going up in price then i would get that before it does, later on get some fp's to complete every thing.

the manifold with stock cams wont do much of crap for him. Hed be much more pleased with the gain from cams over a manifold. A SMIM in most cases isnt even needed, the stock manifold outperforms all in mid range power. Not too many are revving to 7.5K+

I second that . Go with the cams

I would go and get some cams. You might want to check out the comp cams as well as FP and HKS.

i would also go with the cams. How high is your redline? If your going over 7k, the magnus will be choked with the stock cams so you'd be better off with the 272's and then going for a SMIM.

I saw the manifold tests, cams and mani are like peanut butter and jelly, just not the same without one another.

Stock intake mani was a restriction after 6k, hp plataued and went down. Ive also seen the cams test, no difference. If you guys could look at the bigger picture here, get the mani, save a few weeks, and get the cams, he might save 100-200 dollars.

Lookin at it long term, if instant gratification is most important than by all means get the cams.

<----would prolly get cams too :shhh:

SMIM isn't going to perform to well with a stock ported head. It won't shine nearly as much as a ported one would. Cam's will def. shine and see even more improvement with the new manifold. But I'd just port ur stock manifold some and get the cams. Maybe look into a ported head.

Not saying the SMIM isnt going to performa and make power but not as comparative as to cams and his power band.

Say make 20hp but for like 1000RPM's 6500-7500 u might make that 20HP more but ur mid range will probably suffer.

cams.......blah blah blah I have no facts just my personal use of cams and my stock intake manifold.

Btw....I got 264's and I lovem.....FP has nice deal on cams.

I love the low end I got out of my 264's and follow's me to 7.5k with a def. turbo spool up improvemtn (bottom end stronger than stock cams)
