hey guys im looking to buy a pair of HKS 272 cams, and was wondering how much of a difference the actual GEARS would make. Im still debating wether or not i should purchase the gears for $300... does anyone have experiance with the cams itself w/out the gears? is it a really big difference, and most important --- bang for buck, are the gears worth my $300 :dsm:

Gears will yield you little to no power if you don't know how to degree them which I can almost say you don't.

I had 272's in my Buschur stage 3 motor. Dave Buschur said he does not degree HKS cams as they are always ok just straight up as they come. I changed them out for a set of Crower stage 4's because I wanted more cam and did them with the stock gears also. No problem, runs awesome and pulls like mad. I would recommend the Crower stage 4's over the HKS if you really want to make more power. HKS are great also, just not as much pull as the Crowers and the Crowers are about $50. less. Mark

No their not useless. If you want to get the maximum power from the cams and can spend alot of time on the dyno to set them up properly, then their worth it. If your like 95% of the people out there, just drop the cams in without the gears & go.

how much of a power gain should i expect if i do get the gears along with the cams, tuned to the correct degree, rather than just the cams alone... thanks guys :dsm:

Probably not enough power to justify the extra cost of the gears & the dyno time (unless you have extra money to waste). The power potential of the gears will depend on your setup. For most street setups I would doubt if you would see a hp gain in the double digits with the gears.

for a price of $250 for installation, would you guys recommened my doing it my-self? or having a professional do it. how hard is it to install cam shafts ? how much whp gain should i be expected ? :dsm:

also, has anyone seen a DIY step by step for installation on the cams... i saw a thing on vfaq.com but the page is no longer in service... http://www.prostreetonline.com/pso/pages/howto/4g63cams.asp <--- thats what i found... anyone know of anywhere else i can check ? thanks

Changing the cams is simple. The difficult time consuming part that MUST be done correct it resetting the timing belt. You need to remove the drivers side front wheel and drivers side motor mount and the lower side cover and do the timing belt . If you are not sure of doing this then $250. is a fair price. If the timing belt is due to be changed this is the time to get it done. HP depends on the rest of your mods but 35 is the common figure used for the HKS 272's. I did not check your mods but if you have only a 16G or smaller a set of 264's might be better and if you are not prepared to rev to 8000 or higher then perhaps the 272's are not the cams for you. My opinion here. I am using the Crower stage 4's in place of the HKS 272's I had. I like them a bit better as they pull harder but dyno time is required to have some solid numbers next. mark

:dsm: i dont plan on sticking with my EVOIII, soon enough im planning on going with a 20G or something similar to that size... i think 272's are the ones im gonna go with...

Then go with the 272s, if thats what you want. I like the Comp Cams 101200s, or the 264/272 set up. Also the gears arn't nessisary for you, but I would get the gears and cams at the same time. Also not trying to be an @$$ or anything but check your capitilization with the "i"s and what not. Just telling you this so the mods dont have to.
