Hi, I need some help... I have recently bought 90 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. About a couple of weeks after I bought it, the car started to stall after I start it when it's warm. Additionally, the exhaust part of the turbo was overheating and glowing red in the dark . My knowledge of cars is very basic, by I'm hoping to change that in a not so distant future. I took the car to the mechanic and asked to take a look at it. I told him that from what I've heard, it could be the air sensor going out (again, my knowledge is limited). They looked at it and told me that they adjusted the timing (it did stop the exhaust overheating) but could not figure out why it would stall right after it starts because it did not happen when they tested it.
A week later, I drove the car to work and as soon as I started accelerating, the car started shaking (kind of back and forth motion) and the turbo gauge went all the way to the top and would not go down untill I would let go off the gas pedal. I took it to the mechanic again (it is the same place, no one else seems to know anything about turbos and tell me to go someplace else... ) They looked again and told me that I need a new mass air flow sensor and a new ECU !!!
I cannot afford to buy either one brand new, most of my money went to buying the car itself. I have another Talon, it's 92 and is TSI AWD as well (the engine is pretty old, the tranny is slowly dieing and the body is not very presentable - thus I bought another one in a "better" condition). I could take both from the 92 one, but I would rather keep it just in case or sell it as is while it still runs fairly well (other than the tranny).
I looked on Ebay and found rebuilt ECU for 1G with turbo for $200 but with only 5 days warranty... However, from what I understood, I don't really need a new ECU, it's just that Mitsubishi reccomends them to get the "module" for ECU so that it doesn't overheat and it's a good idea to replace the ECU at the same time.
I will probably swap the ECUs in my two Talons since I know that in 92 Talon the ECU is fine. But the MAF sensor is very hard to find.
As I said, I don't know much about cars, just the very basics. I am reading around that many people put 2G MAF sensors in their 1G cars and they are much better than the 1G MAF sensors.
Could someone please explain to me what parts (other than the MAF sensor itself) do I need to make the swap? Any other comments on anything I mentioned above are very much appeciated, especially if someone could explain to me whether or not I even need a new ECU (mechanic says that it tested fine, but........ and some more BS, I don't trust what they say, but once they start working on the right thing, they do a good job) and what is the difference between ECU and ECM?
