so, i've seen that mitsubishi adds hardening meterial to their crankshafts, and when/if you have it re-machined it takes all that meterial off. so, im really quite intrested in buying a 2.4l 6 bolt machined crankshaft for $140. are machined cranks really that bad? or is it alot of hipe. i understand the importance of having that extra strenght for the bearings, but cant the machinest who re-does the crank add it back on?

depends on how much it was ground, the hardening is decently thick. Also, see if its been re-nitrated. BJ's does it when they grind cranks. In that case its no big deal.

.25 mm = 10 over I believe. From what I was told the nitrading is a few thousands thick, so that probably took it off. But there is more than a few threads floating around about desired power levels and the need for the hardening. I would be more concerned if the fillets were radiused vs. the hardening being taken off.
