Windsor,
My talon just recently started making anoise that sounds like lifter tick except much louder. It sounds like it's coming from the upper timing belt area or the cams. It only makes the noise between 0 and 2500RPM, above that it makes no noise. it's not an exhaust leak, it's apretty clear metal-on-metal sound. I'm really at a loss to what it could be.

Anyone got any ideas here??

Did u ever come to a conclusion. right now my 93 is making the same noise. I replace lifters and it still did it. I thought maybe bent valve but I have good compression. Mine does it up untill about 3-3500 rpm. Thanks...

Prob do an oil pressure check of sorts. Low RPMS isn't feeding enough oil to the lifters until pressure is up to quiet them down.

..or your lifters are getting tired, or defective and can't hold the pressure...

It can also depend on what grade of oil you're using .. use a thick 15w/40 to 20w/50w oil can't flow easily enough as with a 5w/30 or 10w30 to fill the lifters to help quiet down the ticking...

Did both. still got the noise... Possibly balanceshafts? or oil pump. by BShaft belt broke and I just noticed it.... could be the oil pump?

Well, since the balance shaft belt is broken, the front balance shaft is no longer turning, so I would doubt it as the knocking. This issue does need to be addressed though.

You may be able to listen to the oil pump/shaft with a screwdriver butted up aganist the pump housing and your ear while it is knocking. Or a stethoscope, if you have one.

To tell if it is the main bearings knocking. Pull the plug wires one by one. If the knock goes away after pulling a cylinder's plug wire it is that cylinder causing the knock.

Sounds like you have some diassembly and inspection to do to trace down this knocking. What was the oil pressure?

Well. I didn't check the pressure, but on the stock guage it seemed normal... I can't remember. actually i think it was low at idle. Anyway. I have the timing belt off, so I'm just gonna pull the oil pan and inspect everything and pull the oil pump out. Should I just go ahead and replace the main and rod bearings while I'm in there if the crank is ok? How can I tell if the wrist pins are good from underneath? Also, anyway to visually or mechanically inspect the oil pump to tell if it is good? I have a new one for a 1g 7bolt engine, not sure if they are the same. thanks.
