So im driving to my parents house, and my car starts making a loud ass whining noise. It sounds like im in reverse but in all 5 forward gears.

The noise is not present when the car is not moving. It is definately not the engine because the whine is wheel speed dependent, not RPM dependent. Im hoping that its the transfercase, that its just low or empty on fluid and i can just refill it. I can definately feel more hesitation like its not getting enough lube.

I limped it the rest of the way, the noise didnt get any worse, but it was LOUD. The car drove fine, no knock, oil pressure and level good in the engine.

Im going to change the tranny and transfer case fluid tommorrow, as NO ONE is fricking open.

Any other ideas?

If it's a constant whine and is road speed related as opposed to engine speed, I'd wonder about the final drive in your transmission, the transfer case or the rear differential. All of those would be linear with road speed. If it were the input part of the trans it would change with your engine speed.

Check all of your fluids and hopefully nothing is damaged.

Good Luck

Thank you. At least i have a couple old dsm friends in the area, if my xfer case went out. Ill report back tomorrow.

My transmission did this right before the center diff went bad an locked up all 4 wheels on the offramp. I'd take it and have it checked out. Mine had clean fluid and shifted great right up until it broke.

Exactly the problem I had when my transfer case lost fluid. I would not drive your car at all until you figure out the problem. My transfer case ended up seizing up to the output shaft of the transmission requiring disassembly of the transmission to retrieve the retaining ball at the end of the shaft.

I had Jon at TRE take the transmission apart to inspect everything, and nothing else was damaged, but every case is different. I ended up getting a new transmission anyways as it was already out.

I was getting the whine about 1 or 2 weeks before my tranny went. Jon at TRE said it was a failed bearing and the center diff housing was also cracked. Looks like it's possibly time for a rebuild.

Merry F'in Christmas, right!?

i am hoping just fluid is all it needs. i cannot afford a rebuild right now

well it turned out to be the transfer case. i put one in from a 95 and all is well.
