Ok, so I was driving down the highway and start hearing a loud whine sounds while doing 70 mph. I pulled the car over looked underneath checked the shifting everything seemed, fine so I pulled back out onto the road only to get the whine sound again. So I start speeding up and slowing down and when I do so you can kind of hear the sound change with the speed and kind of sounds like the gears are bouncing or something, when I push the clutch in though while going down the highway the sound completely goes away. I pull over and check the transmission fluid and it is full, transfer case on the other hand is empty. I fill it to find a blown seal where it connects to the transmission, great so I just assume that its coming from the transfer case, but why doesn't it whine with the clutch in? I take it to Chrysler and tell them I'd like them to check for the transfer case and see if the recall will apply to it, but I didn't tell them about what I discovered I just told them about the whine. (My mess up?) Well they called and said that they think it could possibly be the TOB because it doesn't whine when the clutch is pushed in, and if it were the transfer case it would whine as long as the wheels are moving.
So my thinking was if the TOB was going bad it would make a sound in neutral, and I think the pitch would be more high pitched then a gear whine sound.
If it is the transfercase why is there no sound with the clutch pressed in?
