Went for a ride today and came home to figure out that I had a crack in my valve cover, but even worse was the sound coming from underneath after shutdown... It sounds like a tapping (not a ticking) and is fairly loud. I plan on pulling the valve cover tomorrow but could anyone tell me what I should be looking for?

How is it running, aside from the noise? Just guessing...collapsed lifter. Hopefully you didnt lose a rocker arm.

It runs pretty good. Aside from that. I'm hoping that it's something other than lifters etc. I don't feel like dealing with the bs of a timing belt again. The head is relatively newly rebuilt also so I don't know how that could happen

You said that you hear the noise AFTER turning the engine off, as the engine begins to cool, correct? If that's the case, then you're just hearing all the metal components in the engine returning to their normal size. Due to thermal expansion, when components heat, they expand, and as they begin to cool, they shrink. Now this expansion/contraction is very very slight, but can still cause noises to be heard. Most of the time they're more of a metalic ping, but could be though of as a ticking noise.

No not like gunshot. I actually ran the car today to work and back. I noticed that I'm losing a little oil from around the oil filter housing (liquid cooled) I think it's dripping from the part that the oil filter comes into. The filter was replaced so I'm hoping it just didn't seal 100% but I don't think that's very likely... Is there any common oil leak in this area? I'm thinking it either has to be the ofh itself or my oil pan not sealing 100%. But it say in my driveway while rig fixed for months and sill had a good amount of oil in it when I started it today
