Hey guys, I have a 96 gst. As I was taking the car to change my oil the car started a loud knocking. I got the car back to my garage and looked at it and the sound is coming from everywhere. From the valve cover down over to the oil pump. I got new lifters cause eclipse's are known for those to go bad and cause a knocking. So i got big bore lifters, hks cams, water pump, timing belt, and balance shaft belt. Got it all back together and it's still knocking. Oh when I changed the lifters I didn't get new rocker arms or rollers. Any ideas?

Unfortunately that can be an internal problem, like a bad rod or spun bearing. The best thing to do is bring to someone who knows DSMs and have it checked it out. It's better than guessing.

I had this same problem, and it scared me. I took it to my garage tore it apart a week later, and turned out I spun a rod bearing. On my way to the garage I noticed it had half the power it ever had, if this is whats going on, I would say spun rod bearing.

Just a tip on how to locate the problem, its not high tech but goto the hobby store get a wooden dowl about 1/2" thick they normally come 3' long. Place one end of different parts of the motor with your ear on the other end. You should be able to locate it like that. Or you could spend then $30 for an automotive stetescope.

or just grab a piece of rubber hose, like a 1/4" thick and put one end in your ear and do the same thing as with that dowel. thats how i found a clicking comming from my IAC motor

I dont like to steer people towards harbor freight because then they will say wow i can get all these tools really cheap. then the cheap tools will fail them. Oh well circle of life.

I agree for many sorts of tools. But a stethescope probably isn't going to be getting many thousands of hours of use, and most of the prying it's used for is rather light. Having one fail -if you could get it to- won't bring a car down off a lift onto a nearby innocent. Anyone getting $30 for a stethescope deserves a wallop from a $70 crowbar.

As for the motor in question, it's most likely a rod bearing, or a balance shaft bearing. Neither of which will any-priced stethescope very accurately find.

I learned to build DSM's because of a ticking noise. The freaking noise would not go away, so first order of business I changed the water pump because the car over heated. No go on that so I checked the timing to make sure it was right and it was dead on. Changed the head for a chance it was valves ticking. Same noise going on. Pulled the front oil pan and found this odd looking flat piece of metal. Did a search on what it could be and bingo, I had found a balance shaft bearing. It was really bad news as we had just paid $2000 for the car the day it broke, but I know if it breaks now I can fix it. We just ended up doing a new rebuild due to all the shavings in the motor. So yes, I would bet on bearings as Defiant said.

it may possibly be the dreaded crank walk. in my experiences with it when it happens the knocking sounds like it is coming from many places. the best bet is to pull the oilpan and check for metal shavings and see if u can get the crank to move around or you notice anything else.
