so recently i been in an accident which was body work! What cause the accident was my driver cv axle broke.. faulty item :banghead: but anyways i hit the mountian head on about 25 mph thank god i hit alot of soft dirt. after that i got it towed to the house and put every back together but never started it up. Once I started it up i heard a real loud knock from the head so I pulled the valve cover off and looked around everything looked fine then I checked the spark pugs and no signs of the piston hitting the spark plugs! Does anyone have an idea on whats going on!? Sorry for the long story!

Imi having the same issue with mine. Turns out I have a sticky lifter that went bad so it causes a loud knock sort of like a tapping sound from my valve cover so this is most likely what your experiencing. Your best bet is to just replace the cylinder head.

Replacing the entire cylinder head seems like a pretty drastic move. Maybe just start with a new set of lifters. If possible upload a video or sound clip so we can help pinpoint the cause of the noise.

There is some very bad information already in this thread.

What you describe as a knock, could very well be a tap to many.

It could very well be something entirely different. Have you checked and see how your header condition is? A leaky header can have a tapping noise that is confused for valvetrain noise often. When you smacked the ground you may have bent the something out of whack creating a leak that your hearing as a tap . Also, you may only have a lazy lifter from sitting. Your more than likely not going to see valve contact on your spark plug electrode. Rule the simple things out first. Do not replace the head!

Might be more serious, esp if that motor suddenly stopped when that axle took a dump. In avation, when a piston powered plane has to pancake it in on the runway, the motor gets suddenly stopped causing some possible nterior damage.

Normal procedure, in this case is what's called "propellor checking" -tearing down the motor to check for fracture cracks and stuff that could get all bent up ... and you might have to do the same with that motor.

most damage was done to the passenger side but it looks like cosmetic work but to add to everything i just cleaned my lifter like a month before all this happened. So I thought something busted on the lower end, I drained the oil, dropped the pan and looked around and everything looks fine . Today i thinking if i should pull the head to see if anything is wrong>
