Kitchener,
sup guys, all the shift mods have now been done on the car but i still have 1 problem, on the tranny there is an arm that connects to the cable ,(the arm clostest to the rad) it has alot of play and its causing me to shift poorly. is there a way to get that arm tight without moving the tranny off? to help its when you grab your shifter knob and move it up and down ... thats the play the arm makes on the shifter.. and help guys?:notgood:

if it makes a difference it got really bad when i put the washers on the shift base.

Question: when you take the cables off the "SELECT" (which moves up and down) and "SHIFT" ( which moves left and right) linkage on the tranny, does any one of these two linkages feel real loose when you move them by hand?

on the tranny where the cables connect there are 2 connectors. 1. that is just on the tranny and 2. the one that im talking about actually goes into the tranny, that one makes alot of play on the shifter and hard to shift(not grinding but really knotchy going into 3rd and 4th mostly.) and yes the one is loose by hand.

ok i did some reading and the selector arm is loose to the touch, do i need to remoce my tranny to fix the free play?

Which one are we talking about? I got lost with your description.... 1 or 2?

number 2 in the pic and i thinks its gonna be alot of work right? but if it helps it doesnt make the gears grind at all just makes going tonto the gears feel like its hitting something

1- being SELECT

low position - 1st and 2nd gears
middle position - 3rd and 4th
upper position - 5th and REV

2- being SHIFT

Also, wonder if your cables are out of adjustment....You adjust those under the shifter console.

Do this little trick: motor running in idle, lightly push the shifter through the forward gears without dumping the clutch. If the motor slows down a bit, the syncros are good. But if you grind in any gear, that set of syncros are bad and time for a tranny overhaul.

the car does die down a bit ive noticed but what the problem is when you look at the picture , if you were to grab the arm it jiggles up and down .

#2 is supposed to move up and down. Inspect the spot that #1 contacts #2 for the little "guide". If this is not there, then your shaft will have a little excess play.

so is this anything that can be fixed without takiking the tranny out? ### im not sure what little ball your talking about, there is a little black peice inbetween the link thats attached to the other arm and they connect each other, other then that, the arm thats gives me play wiggles from the ffront of the car to the back but not alot just enough to give me alot of play in the car..............and one other question , under number 2 arm in the pic - what does that bolt do ### one time i cracked it loose and some oil or sometthing came out..

The bolt under the #2 is a guide pin. It is very unlikely that anything bad has happened because it was loosened. It guides a blocker that keeps the fork notches in place so that the selector stays lined up. If the #2 shaft wiggles side ti side then your case fron half is worn. I'm not sure if it has a bushing or can be bushed. Have you checked your shifter bushings?(In the car) I also wanted to add that #2 does not, in fact use a ball and spring detent (for centering), but two springs. One on top, one on bottom. There are ball and spring detent on the shift rail forks that will hold each respective rail in either the forward, center, or rear position. These are under the three bolts heads, that you see in the picture, below the reverse light switch.
