feels like my shifter on the auto trans is off

when i go to start the car sometimes it wont attempt to unless i press up on the shifter in the car even though its in P. also when im in drive its 2 unless i slightly press up almost into neutral. then it does into drive. and L feels like it is not really there. it engages but feels like the l position is to far for it to want to go. my question is, is can the shifter lever bolted to the auto trans be adjusted?

The adjustment for the shift cable is where the shift cable bolts to the shift lever on the transmission. The shift lever is on the transmission is slotted to allow adjustment.

I had one that the bushings for the shifter where worn and felt really loose I am not sure if they make them for the auto's I had to make my own
