i know there are 100 of these threads around, but when it comes to DSM im a complete newb.

I found a 95 talon tsi (the tsi/gsx are my literal dream cars) its all original with 130k on it. i think the owner wants $2000-$2500 on it (still working out the price) but the only possible downside, is its automatic.

what kind of things do i need to look out for when buying an old auto? should i plan on having to replace the tranny immediately? do they hold up well under boost?

should i just forgo this chance and wait for a manual in similar condition? i really want to start with it as original as possible to build myself. let me know what you think

There is nothing wrong with auto.
They have a bad stigma due to misinformation.
The autos in these cars are strong, stronger than manuals for sure.
The w4a33 is an very good transmission.

so this wouldnt be a terrible place to start? if i end up getting this guy to sell to me, being all original with 130k miles, what should i look to replace/check before buying parts for a build? should i just replace the head altogether or do you think i good tear down and cleaning would suffice? im a little concerned with getting into it and finding the piston rings are shot or the valves are all marred up.

As far as "knowing" if the block/head needs a rebuild or not, a compression test will let you know that.

You could use a coupon code at advance and pick-up a compression testing kit, and test the motor before purchasing... that will give a quick glimpse into the motor's health.

Does he have records of maintenance, particularly the timing belt ?

When you to look at it, do a compression test. Will give you an idea on how health the engine is. Also take it for a test drive and see how everything works. If you buy it then you need to do all the maintence before doing any kinds of upgrades.

tmoney beat me to it

Tmoney i will be looking at a DSM today also and need to compression test it. What's this code you speak of? My old tester tore on me
