If all goes well I'll be picking up a '91 Talon TSI this Sunday.

As the car sits now it needs some parts to get running again. I'm already set on the car so please try to just keep it focused on the parts.

Car already has: FMIC, turbo-back exhaust, 2 walbro 255's, -AN line from tank to rail w/ AEM fuel rail and a stock motor.

I've been told it'll only need a clutch, ignition, ECU, injectors, and turbo kit to get it running. (this is ignoring the small things like gaskets, hardware, lines, etc)

My question really is, what parts should I go with? I'll have some cash between a car I'm parting out and income taxes to put it together correctly and have it running pretty nice.

I definitely intend to run E85 so I kind of figured just do it right and get a set of FIC 2150's. For ECU I was thinking either Link V3 or maybe an AEM V1 if it springs up. I've got a few people willing to toss me a stock ignition so that's handled as well.

The big things I'm concerned with are the clutch and turbo kit. I'd like to see the car in the neighborhood of 450-500whp with some headroom for when I drop in a built block. I was considering maybe an S259ETT, FP3065 or maybe even a 20G as far as turbos go but on the clutch I'm at a loss.

Any help is appreciated!

I'll just come right out and state that usually, picking up a car that needs work isn't always recommended as there's no telling what headaches you'll run into. Depending on what you do, there can be quite a bit of money tied up in just getting it back to a condition where it is able to start, muchless worry about a tuning solution. I'd recommend that you look the car over well and look at your budget to be sure that this is what you're looking at getting into.

Secondly, while I can't recommend a Turbo due to limited knowledge on anything above the standards of a 20g, if I've preached it once I'll preach it again - the TMZ Southbend clutch should be absolutely perfect for the range you're looking for. It feels stock - it's a kevlar type so not too much worry with glazing - and it's well made.

TMZ Performance

The South Bend Clutch TZ-Series Sprung Full-Face Kevlar Disk was used in my race car for 3 years of extreme abuse, and withstood very high horsepower and torque levels of 500-630WHP and 460-590TQ (numbers are from dyno-tests on a 2WD WinDyn Super Flow Chassis Dynamometer). It withstood a couple hundred track passes, over a hundred dyno pulls in this power level range, and over 30,000 street miles with regular launching, stop-and-go traffic, and fast shifting up to 8600-9000rpm. Three years later when it was taken out for a clutch upgrade due to my increased power levels, it still had more than half of its friction surface left with no uneven wear to the clutch pressure plate or the clutch disk!

Wow, if that clutch performs as well as the review says it does it definitely sounds like it's right up my alley. Thanks for the recommendation!

Anyone else have any suggestions?

how about fpr, wideband, (datalogger?) suspention, new motor mounts, gauges to name a few. How about the head? springs and retainers, camshafts, lifters, upgraded valves ect. Stock internals? I would go wiseco and eagle... just me though. That deep, replace hg and timing with typical parts that go with that. Radiator upgrade.

Here's a good link to help. Tech Guide - DSMtuners

ECU and injectors can be found through the classifieds or local jusk yard... If you are buying new, I strongly suggest extrempsi.com. great turn shipping times, prices and customer support

If you do get this car, the one thing you'll be fortunate on is that it already has two installed walbros that can be a real pain fitting them both in. As for parts for your goal, I'd say the same TMZ clutch, deffinetly build up your rods and pistons, etc... How long has it been sitting for, how many miles. I would work over the cylinder head, pull your lifters and rockers and clean the piss out of them gauranteed they're clogged up good. Probably replace the lifters actually with mitsubishi V3 lifters. See how your valves are doing, that will deffinetly tell you a lot of how the motor has been treated. Link V3 will do everything you need, get a good WB and boost gauge to start off with so you can do a good tune. I'm sure you can piece together a turbo kit through the classifieds. Should be easy to find a manifold. Because you got two fuel pumps make sure you regulate your fuel, and i'd say FIC 1200cc injectors.

If your doing E85, you could also consider methanol. As said early, I hope this car doesn't require to much work like they sometimes do. Good luck with this build!! :thumb:

Suspension is Adjustable KYB'S and Megan springs, motor mounts are good (so I'm told), I won't know about the FPR or WB02 until I see it. Has a set of 272's (forget the brand), wont know about springs and retainers until I pull the head and re-check timing. Has an aluminum rad (Koyo iirc).
I intend to run the stock motor around for a bit while building the spare one that comes with it over time, probably with Manley Turbo Tuff rods and Wiseco HD's (overkill is under rated LOL)

Luckily Extreme is only right around the corner and I've been there quite a few times already LOL.

Car's been sitting for about 3 months and the motor had been running prior, since I intend to pull the head I'll go over everything while I'm in there.

Just actually found a guy locally selling an almost new FP3065 with manifold, wastegate, lines, resitictor, etc for a decent price I'm considering

Thanks for your help guys! I'm headed to check out the car tomorrow and as long as there aren't any blaring issues I intend to pick it up.

Here it is!

1991 Talon TSI, 77k miles, NO rust, 4 bolt LSD rear, twin 255 walbro's in tank, -A/N Pro Classic line to and from the tank, AEM fuel rail, Prothane mounts, Buschur FMIC, Jay's Racing alternator relocation kit, Battery relocated to the trunk, spare t-case, spare 5 speed trans, spare 6 bolt block w/ crank, rods and pistons, SS clutch line, Koyo aluminum radiator w/ mishimoto fans, Comp 272's, KYB adjustables with Eibach springs, JMF OCC, Boomba Throttle Body and I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting.

Needs a clutch, injectors, ignition (I have one laying around), turbo kit and an ECU among various little shit. If all goes well I hope to have it running by April.

Rocking the GST rims... very nice

I just wish they were in better shape. You can't see it in the pic but the finish is chipping off and they're starting to rust, which totally sucks because these are probably my favorite OEM wheels.

I'm considering a set of 5zigen FN01R-C's or Rota Slipstreams to keep the look similar

That looks almost identical to the one I just picked up, and that is probably my favorite 1g color. It looks great be sure to keep us posted.

Thanks funny thing was it had a gm maf on it and the guy said it wouldn't rev over 3k, so i got it drove it down the rode and me and my friend decided to take a look at it. The guy had the translator set to 2g specs, changed it then it ran fine. Picked it up for 1200. No rust only two dings on the roof. Ill start my rebuild after I get the garage done this spring. But I'm always up for motivation LOL.

Well, figured I'd post an update. The weather here has seriously slowed me down on making any actual headway with the car.

Pretty much what I need/want is a boost gauge, wideband (probably AEM UEGO), AEM V1 EMS, FIC 2150's, FP3065 kit, the TMZ South Bend clutch recommended above, new flywheel, a new battery, FPR (recommendations are welcome), leather 1G front seats (if you know of anyone selling a set in pA let me know please!), JMF Drag SMIM (Jim kind of owes me LOL) and then the various gaskets and hardware I'll need.

Im going to go over all the wiring in the car and make sure it all checks out, especially the battery relocation job. Need to pull the trans and T-case currently in the car and start tearing those down to look for problems.

Just hope this weather breaks soon so I can get my hands on this thing!

Just thought I'd make another update, I'll probably put together a build thread when I get in from work.

I've managed to come across some great deals on parts I need. Picked up a set of FIC 1650's locally, grabbed a V1 AEM EMS, T4 tubular manifold for free from a local (sat in his garage for years).

I'm still working towards clutch & flywheel, afpr & filter and a turbo.

I decided on a Borg Warner S200SX 59mm. Unless there's valid reason I should reconsider...

I'm trying to avoid starting a new thread.

I assume I should be feeding the turbo I posted above from the OFH, correct? Also, what size feed line should I use and do I also need a restrictor?

Thanks

Ok so I'm shopping for my fuel filter and pressure regulator to button up my fuel system but I had a few questions.

I know I'll need -AN for the inlet and outlets Can anyone confirm that a fitting that requires a 1" wrench is indeed -10?

Since I plan to run E85 I know I'll need a SS element for the fuel filter. Should I go with the highest micron count filter I can or is it unnecessary?

You can feed that turbo from the OFH w/ no restrictor.

What pump are you going to be running? E85 does need a stainless element or it will fall apart over time. If you're redoing the lines, you'll need a pre and post pump filter (assuming you're going with something external). 10 micron and 100 micron are typically what people go with.

The S200SX is out the window and I'm looking for a 3065 again LOL. I've found a few kits thus far.

Currently I've got 2 Walbro 255's in a custom sending unit. The lines were already run when I bought the car, I just need a filter and AFPR to button up the system. The best highest micron filter I've found was 75 as far as Fuelab filters go (unless they're junk, then I'll look into Aeromotive or a different brand by your recommendation).
