logging for dummies

Just would like to know the basics to logging and tuning. I am about to start logging as soon as i get laptop back. I have no idea what all i am looking for so i could use some help and this could be use for others who start to log for the first time.

I am using the mmcd on a laptop. I was looking more to how to set it up for logging. Like how to set it up does it just log or do i need to tell it?
