I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

I'm running one of the first versions of these e-bay style intercoolers. It's a hybrid intercooler that I got directly from Japan. (f&f quot right there) We got it someting like $300 shipped and was a hell of a deal then. There are differences though with these cores. Some have different bar/plate counts from style to style. Here's a pic of mine:

What A/F ratio, you would have to be pretty lean to accomplish this on 450's?

If i remember right it was 10-1 air fuel ratio. The O2 sensor was reading in the optimal range, which it was the stock one though. I think that 450's have a little more potential in them than everyone gives them credit for. I think that stock fuel system (lines, filter banjo bolt) is very very restrictive, i once read of a group of guys flow benching a stock fuel pump with -8an braided steel line, and it was outflowing a walbro 190 with the stock lines. That to me is pretty good evedence that just a fuel pump upgrade is not good enough, that you should be able to get more fuel to the injectors and run a lower duty cycle and run the 450's for more power. I have seen honda guys with 400 hp boosted b18's running stock dsm 450's before, that is some crazy shit, the motor is smaller and all, but it is still making 400 hp regardless and should require the same fuel, if tuned properly as the 4g63, to go with 400 hp worth of air. But as i said they were running under 90 percent untill 4th, than they overrun and fuel cut, than the wipers come on, it you know what i mean. Most of the shit people talk about ebay intercoolers and maft's and so on is all what they have heard from all of the other guys on the board. One or 2 people say something, (example that the maft is hard to tune with) and than everyone is saying that shit, when in fact it is very easy to tune with. Well don't try and tell those dsmtalk guys that. But i 100 percent give the ebay intercoolers 2 thumbs up.

Can I ask where you bought the piping?

I got 2 of the biggest radius U-bends from here. I got 6" of straight pipe from Autozone, and the couplers from NAPA/Home Depot.

My current core is 3.5" thick. I have a stock radiator and I have ran stock fans as well as SPAL's and I have never had overheating issues. I have read that some people do. I'm not really sure why some do and some don't. The people that have issues usually install ducts to direct air toward the radiator. That usually corrects the problem.

I run the same core as Paul. 24x12x3.5. I too run the stock radiaton, but w/ only 1 12" SPAL fan. I also have never had any overheating issues w/ my car. I run stock t-stat too.
If you run into coolling issues, I suggest starting w/ basics first. I.E. flusing coolant, changing t-stat, etc.

i got the ebay core, running a ported 50 trim. doesnt heat soak, but small areas of the corners of the ic get warm to the touch compared to the rest of the surface area of the ic. i run 19 psi on 91 oct. WES!

I have had a Johnny Racing Intercooler for over a year now without any problems at all. So far I have not heatsoaked it at all and I have had a 14b, 16g, 20g and just currently installed a FP Red. I got the intercooler and all the bends I needed for under 400.

I've been looking at the Johnny Racecar intercoolers for a while, but I'm not into the whole "custom fabrication" thing. Too bad he doesn't offer piping kits too. I don't think I'm lazy, but I don't feel confident going to the hardware store and buying U-bends, straight pipe, couplers and clamps, welding on a BOV flange, and having a short route setup. Routing to the stock location starts to get expensive when you factor in that you need to have an aftermarket UICP to make it worthwhile.

Oh well.. everyone else seems to be more ambitious than me anyway

I've had the Johnny Race Car cheapo intercooler since last spring and I trapped 117 on an evo3 16G. I speant probably $350 total including the J pipe from Dejon Tool. Quality intercooler that has lasted for me. I don't think a $1000 intercooler would do anything more than this one could in my case. With a larger turbo, maybe but I'll find out soon enough when I switch to a 60 trim.

I have the 24x9x3 XOXO core. It definetly works, hot side is hot and cold side is always cool or cold to the touch, (depending on outside temps). It fits great in the 2gb opening and I was able to keep the stock fogs. I bought 2.5in piping from JC Whitney and completed the whole setup for around $400 total. It comes polished and the welds looked great. It was definely better quality than I expected.

Extreme Intercoolers on Ebay do not use the Johnny Racecar cores. Extreme's cores are bar and plate and all Johnny Racecar cores are tube and fin.

I got the E-bay special, 210 shipped to my door. 31X12X4. I mounted it with the in and out, (3"), on top. Clocked my PTE SCM50 compressor housing to point up to route my piping. This way I use 5' less piping. 2.5" to the inlet side. 3" to the 3.5" MAF reduced down to the TB. It's awesome. Running 1.4 bar spooled at 3400rpm.

I think it's very similar to the Johnny Racecar intercoolers and these are all over ebay. Core is 20.5"x9"x2.5", and 28" wide overall. I know it's not the biggest or best intercooler out there, but I honestly don't think I'm ready for a giant core. This fits my needs for now and probably for quite some time. I'm happy with it. Of course, I haven't really used it yet, since I still don't have pipes made for it.

I have an Extreme intercooler and it is top notch, I think some of the ones he may use in a kit may be a cheaper , not sure so don't hold me to it. I have the 30x7x3 with the hand built tanks and they seam to have a better looking core than the cheaper ones(not sure haven't seen a test between them) But I would have went with a cheap one, but I bought it before they were on everywhere on ebay. None the less I think over half are made in the same little factory and badged with different tags. But it does seem senseless to spend almost a $1000 on a kit when you can build it for half the price.

Not true. The 7" and 10" DSM "kits'" ETS sells are Hybrid Tube/fin Bar Plate Designs which while more efficient than straight tube/fin are not as efficient as Bar/Plate.

THIS is one of their Bar/Plate offerings. Note that the efficiency rating is 81% vs 78% for their "Hybrid" cores
