so for as long as ive had my car (6 months) it has had a horrible ratteling noise when ever i let off the throttle at low to medium speeds, it also vibrates the whole car, when i push the clutch in it goes away, also when i engage the brakes it also slightly goes away, i was wondering if there is any common problems on 1g's that cause anything to rattle? what should i look for? thanks

i have the same problem on my 2g talon i notice the rattle after i put in my motor mount inserts (front and back only)... ive secured all the head shields and looks likes and the last thing i can think of is the drive shaft.
:talon:

so i messed with my drive shafts... rather drive lines.. and found them to be really loose... i want to get the single piece drive line, i should check my cat however...

You might want to check the carrier bearings. When worn, they will cause excessive driveshaft vibration, which sounds like what you're describing.

If this is the problem, they can be filled or replaced. :talon:

Carrier bearings are the rubber boots around the driveshaft that bolt to the body of the car. There are 2 of them. Its normal for them to move a little, just not excessively. Usually when there bad you will hear a thump under cruise to hard acceleration. The noise you are describing sounds like the rear diff. From what I understand its not uncommon for them to make noise on deceleration.

ok i know its been some months... buuuutt i am really getting frustrated with that damn rattle, i looked all over my driveshaft and found no wear marks such as if the exhaust touching/vibrating on it... so my next step is the carrier bearings... how much do those cost and where can i find them?

I wouldn't recommend the silicon/Window Weld fix for the carrier bearings. It is damn near impossible to get it to cure with the driveshaft perfectly centered...if you go this route you'll more than likely have a worse vibration than you did to begin with.

And it doesn't sound like worn carrier bearings are the source of your noise to me in the first place. Worn carrier bearings usually cause a thump during acceleration, when the driveshaft jumps up and bumps against the exhaust or something else. But they usually don't "rattle".

Does the noise go away if you:

1. Push the clutch in and coast?
2. Shift into neutral and coast?
3. Turn the car off and coast?
4. Shift into neutral, turn the car off and coast?

Can you isolate where the noise seems to be coming from?

Is it a grinding type of noise, or more like something is loose?

Does the vibration/noise change pitch or volume at different speeds?

yes it goes away during all 4 steps... its a violent rattle/thumping noise, and its only when you let off of the gas when in gear (seeing as that is how i slow down is with my engine) and it doesnt occur all the time, in fact only when lower than 3k rpm, high rpm rev-down is fine, but then at around 3k it starts to shake the car and until i push my clutch in it doesnt go away, it also slightly affects the rpm's themselves

Well ...which is it? All 4 conditions above (which includes being out of gear with the car off), or only when decelerating in gear :)

Have you put the car up on a lift and checked for play in everything? (Driveshafts, axles, rear diff, wheel bearings, etc). Also wouldn't hurt to have someone check the balance of your wheels and look for any strange wear in your tires.

My issue was a severely worn CV in my front driver axle. It happened for me at higher speeds though. I didn't notice the vibration in the wheel, but inspecting the shaft showed that it was practically ready to fall out.

during all 4 steps you hinted at, my car "STOPS" the annoying distinct metal-on-metal rattling noise, and it is only heard while decelerating in any chosen gear, i looked at my carrier bearings and i think that may be the problem, they are vary loose and not in the center of the said bearing...

hmmm.. well it definitely could be the CBs if they are that worn, but there could also be other issues going on in the driveline as well. Do you notice the classic "thump" when you accelerate hard in 1st and/or second?

If your CB's are that worn, I would just replace the whole driveshaft assembly. You can replace just the bearings, but it's a bit of a PITA.

I got the whole thing from these guys a couple years ago, and have been pleased so far. (we'll see how that opinion holds up after several miles of new stroker horsepower being pushed through it though :D) I believe it was around $520 or so, with a $200 core on my old driveshaft.

If you do replace the whole assembly, be sure to take note of the factory shims under each side of each bearing. If you don't put them back in the same way they came out (and maybe even if you do), you can get some nasty vibration...and it's a PITA to smooth out through trial and error. Mark the orientation of the rear knuckle where it connects to the rear pumpkin also, just to be safe.
