This has been discussed in the past, the only experience I have with orings is the motor second motor I built. The block was oringed for stainless steel wire with an oem mls. The more people I talk to the more I lean towards wanting an oring setup. More specifically an oringed block with a receiver groove in the head for a copper headgasket. All of the guys ive spoken to under 9s are running some sort of an oring setup. I am looking at getting an bhj oring tool with a deck plate. Has anyone used this tool?

My head is O ringed. I don't recall off the bat what protrusion the wire is set at but its SS wire. I am running it with a OEM composite gasket. I do not like metal layer gaskets. I especially do not like copper gaskets as it seems they end up leaking coolant.

I agree, the copper gaskets leak coolant, they really are a race gasket for drag only cars, not that there hasn't been a few used on the street with coolant, but they really are made for heat transfer in racing applications, using an o-ring with a mls gasket to me is also a no go, they cant really bite into the mls material like they can the composite.

i would agree. My motor pushed coolant in the past with O ringed head and a MLS gasket. That's why after the refresh it went back to a composite gasket. I will add i see a lot of 4g63's with the block O ringed. I came from the diesel world where everyone O rings the head so i wonder witch is better.

From my understanding the only way to do a oring with mls is to use a reciever groove in the head. I’m not a fan of composite gaskets. I’ve never ran a oringed composite setup but.

My other thought, I have a 2 g head , I welded the coolant passages on the deck,I can run the coolant seperately through the block and the head. I can’t imagine it would greatly effect cooling

From Jeff bush .... stainless oring in head .010 protrusion. Mls gasket. He also mentioned there’s a lot more too it to get these to seal properly. This is for “Lower” power setups

Brent Rau used the composite gasket with o-ringed block, worked to get his car in the 6's.

I run an oring setup on my head with an oem MLS, just finishing up the car and starting to tune but aiming at 40psi through the DSM82.

When I sent my head to DTR, this was the setup he recommended. They are SS rings but not sure how much they stick out.
