Learning about engine/tranny rebuilds

Hey, with my dsm i know this is something im going to have to do in the future. So i want to start reading about it now. I guess i am kind of looking forward to it but i just want it to wait till i atleast move to Orlando so i will have a garage at my house... But i dont know where to start learning about a rebuild, learning about the terminology, what parts are what, knowing what needs to be replaced, what tools will be needed, will it require welding??? To tell you guys the truth im completely clueless about a tranny and engine rebuild but i wanna learn now so i can attempt it myself anybody know any sites or even books that will help wth a rebuild on specifically our cars, preferably site cuz they are free , but thanks guys, i know i sound like the biggest newb rite now but hey everyone learns some way and some how. Or does anyone else have any other suggestions? thanks guys

your in the right forum. The only way I learn is to actually do it. You could buy a shop manual like haynes to get some idea on how to do it. I always have a backup engine and tranny just incase. You can get some used engine and tranny for cheap. This forum has a lot of resources and people that are willing to help out. Search function is also a good tool for gathering information. Pictures are a great way to help understand the problem.

I would suggest having someone that knows how to rebuild engines help you on your rebuild. They will be able to tell you things that books and pictures can't. It will make the process alot easier and they might be able to answer any questions you might have.

Rebuilding a 4g63T is alot easier than everyone says. The most importan thing is get a digital camera and when you tear apart the old engine take alot of picks, so you can have a refrence. Also when you are putting in the new bearings remember to always have them in oil and have oil on your fingers when you are installing them. One other thing is mark the rods and pistons when you take them out 1-4 because they have to go back in the origanal cylinders or it will unbalance it. One last thing is TAKE YOUR TIME!!! I just got done rebuilding mine about a week ago and i always try hurrying threw things to try to impress people, but if you short cut one thing you will most likely have to pull the engine and tear it apart again. So be patient and have a punching bag by to take the agre out on bc it will be fustrating sometimes !

20 over pistons
20 rings

balance shaft bearings( Which I didnt use bc I did the bs eliminator)
timing belt
balance shaft belt

every single gasket possible(including throttle body, thermostat, intercooler, oil pan, EVERYTHING)
head gasket
valve stem seals
exhaust gasket
intake man. gasket
Everything you possible need to fully rebuild your engine except head bolts

If you would like an awesome book to help you learn all about engines and rebuilding them, check a book called Automotive Engines Theory and Servicing. It's by James D. Halderman and printed by Prentice Hall. ISBN #0-13-799701-9 use that to search on Barnes and Noble or something. This is the book that I used in my college class for engines. I has very good reading and numerous pictures and inclides a CD-Rom disc. Good luck!!
