Largest tire that will fit on a '90 Talon

Ok I have read thread after thread but still don't have a good answer on this as far as definitively. What is the largest tire I can put on my 1990 Talon with 16" rims. I got a good deal on some 255/50 drag radials but not sure that they will fit without problems so has anyone ran this size of tire on an old 1G car with any luck? Thanks all.

I would check first the rim width range allowed by the tire specifications. The stock rims are 6", I checked a few track tires in the size you mentioned and they were mostly 7" to 9". Also, that specific size would put your total wheel diameter 4.4% over the stock one.

Any tire can be made to fit, but the problem you would have would be bulge. The tire will not have enough seating surface to make a good contact patch. For a 6" width rim I think a 225 would be a "good" fit with anything more be less than ideal.

BTW, you also need to be aware of the type of tire. Drag radials are a little different in that they have a larger sidewall. Your problem will still be the size of your contact patch, but they will have more sidewall to balloon out and produce a greater contact area.

They "can" fit, it may require spacers to avoid your strut towers and I wouldn't recommend it, but they "can" fit.

A 225 is the max you should go on a 6" rim and the ride quality is bad in the turns. Stick to the stock 205 or go 215.

Thanks all, I will bite the bullet, sell what I have and go with 205's since they are going to be Drag Radials only used on the track. I appreciate the feedback to straighten me out. Have a wonderful holiday, mine will be "new, New" tires, .

From what I have seen in the past is a 235 is just about the max limit, of course depending on rim dimensions etc. You can go bigger from there if you get coil overs, without the fatter tires will rub on the lower part of the spring seat. If you have drag radials I dont think you need to worry about going that wide IMO. Hope some of this info helped goodluck!!
