Well I have a question that may be rather easy to answer but this will be my first time trying it so I will ask first.I have a palm m105 logger package with cable, craddle, and whatnot.I want to sell my palm in favor of a laptop. Now the cable in the package has two pieces.one goes to the obd1 port and then has an end that looks as if it would plug into the back of a laptop.from there is another cable that goes to the palm.if I insert the first half of the cable into a laptop would I be able to log on the laptop?given mmcd 1.8 or maybe a better logging solution is downloaded onto the laptop?I would like to ask before I go selling the palm to find out I need more stuff to log on a laptop.thanks for any help in advance.

The connector on the end of that cable you are talking about should be a 9-pin male serial connector. *IF* your laptop has a serial connector, it also would be a male, so you can't just plug them together. What you need is a null modem adapter, NOT a gender adapter. The null modem adapter not only has dual female connectors on it, but it also crosses over pins 2 & 3, which must happen to make this work. Depending how your plug is made, you *may* be able to pull it apart and change the connector to a female 9-pin from Radio Shack, and also swap pins 2&3. Pin 5 is ground.
If your laptop doesn't have a 9-pin serial port (most new ones don't) you need to by a Keyspan USB-to-serial adapter.
I prefer to use the older TMOLogger program on a laptop.

But, as it is an older program, you need to force the Keyspan to use either COM1, 2, 3, or 4, no weird COM11 or whatever. TMOLogger only understands the standard COM1-4.
