Knocking from cylinder 2

I am getting an audible knock from from the engine in my 97 gsx. It comes in when revving the engine between 2k and 3k rpm. I suspect either the wrist pin or rod bearing on cylinder 2 as when i pull the plug wire for that cylinder it goes away. I'm just trying to get some input before i start pulling things apart. What all could this be? what should i check? i drained the oil but no metal flakes are present...

Sounds a lot like a rod bearing to me.

Yeah its just odd that there was no metal shavings in the oil...

Sounds like something down there, your gonna have to tear it apart regardless, there is no simple answer other than getting in there and tell us your findings. Its like a bent valve, or how many you cant tell how many or which ones unitl you pull the head off.

I am going to say rod bearing as well but it defiantly is weird there's no metal shavings in the oil.

Whats with the half a quart of oil on top of the valve cover?

Its not quite a half quart but the valve cover is cracked. I over torqued a bolt after replacing the head gasket. I guess I will start by dropping the pan and checking the rod to crank connection. What would cause a failure like this?

The rod bearing on cyl 2 was in 2 pieces... The crank felt ever so slightly scored. im assuming the best course of action is a complete rebuild. dammit.

Yea, a couple months ago this happened to me on cylinder #4. I couldn't see any metal in the oil either untill I took off the oil pan and there was metal everywere . So what is your plan now?
