Knocking at low rpms.

Im getting this knock around cyl. 4 on the back of the motor the intake mani side. It goes away after 3000 rpms and anytime below then it will knock. I have not lost anypower, this has started when my car ran a quart low on oil and I had ripped on it that day.(with out knowing it was low on oil of course.) I'd appreciate all the help, thanks.

I have to bring this back up because its still doing it, its loud near the cam gears. It does it cold and warm, I have been driving it when its doing it and its just getting worse. I hope someone could help me out because its very embarrassing. I dont think its a lifter because its very very loud.

take a mechanic stethascope and put it on the valve cover and listen then take and put it on the back of the block and listen it could be a bad piston or a bad lifter cant tell ya without being there

Is there any other rigged up ways to do it? I read some wheres that I can use a screw driver.

you can also take a piece of say 1 1/2 to 2 inch round tubing and stick it up to your ear and the other end to the motor that is an older and cheaper way

i would say top end usually the lower end will get louder when you rev and the speed of the knock will go just as fast and the rpm let me know what you can hear though will help figure it out better and how man miles are on the motor

Not that I know of, I pin pointed the noise, It is by the exhaust cam gear. Right below the valve cover.

than you have a lifter that you need to replace
or a bad valve spring or rocker

I know a bad lifter wont damage anything, but would a rocker or a valve spring?

yes if it is a rocker the valve wont open if a valve spring it wont close all the way and if it is a collapsed lifter the valve will not open all the way

There is no way to tell if its either or with out taking the cover off am I correct?

I havent been able to take it off yet, im to scared that I might rip the valve cover gasket. I dont have the money for a new one.
