Sometimes when I'm going downhill I like to put the car in neutral and just coast down at like 40-50 mph. But once I reach the bottom and I put it back in drive, it's like slamming on the brakes. I'll take a stab and say this is bad for the transmission. So I thought about it, and I tried this technique. I watched my RPMs at a certain speed and remember it, and put it into neutral. Then as I come off the downhill, I rev it up in neutral close to the RPM's for my given speed and shift it into drive. Almost flawless transition. No hard engine braking whatsoever. Still, would this be bad for the transmission regardless?

WAITTT are u saying that your car has an automatic transmission and you are doing this. If so thats terrible for the tranny. If its manual transmission just throw it into the gear of the speed your going usually 1st= 0-30 2nd 30-60 3rd 60-90 4th 90-120 and 5th anything over that. But ## going to have a serious problem if u keep doing it and u have a manual transmission.

+1 never do that to a auto unless you love spending money. or altleast just put in back into drive instead of reving it then shooting it back into drive.

Yeah but if I just put it into drive when the RPMs are around 800 while I'm coasting at 45, it feels like engine braking. It's a sudden jerk which I feel is harmful to the transmission.

With what I'm doing, I'm trying to match the speed of the car with the right RPMs when I'm revving it so it's a smooth shift. No jerking whatsoever. But if it's bad either way, I'll stop.

Meh, I do this in my Corsica sometimes too just for the hell of it. I don't see how it can be too bad for the trans, but it certainly isn't doing it any good.

I wouldnt do it. I would have to say thats its not to kind on your transmiison even when rev matching.

Looking to buy a new tranny in the near future I see. Don't do that, your not saving enough gas for the price your gonna pay to have a new trans.

The transmission oil pump circulates fluid to lubricate the gearbox in correlation to the speed of the transmission and the load on it. Coasting underdrives the oil pump and consequently doesn't provide enough lubrication.
Do not coast out-of-gear. Ever.

I agree my friend managed to blow his transmission doing what you did in a similar sense. Plus what could be a possible benefit of putting it in nuetral in a auto tranny? It AUTOMATICALLY puts it in fifth while your coasting or not acceleratin, which is "basically" like nuetral . I have a quick question, does this follow the same for manual transmissions in terms of poppin it out of gear then coasting and putting it back in? I wouldnt think theres is problem doing it with manual's but i cold be wrong..

edit: not sure if its fifth gear it goes into but its at least 4th.. But in coasting it doesnt really matter since your not accelerating.
