Keyless Entry

When I got my car the keyless remote didn't work (it is the factory remote). Thought it might be the battery so I replaced it, still didn't work. Tried the reprogramming instuctions by connecting pins 1 and 4, doors didn't unlock and lock when flipped from off to acc to off - tried this multiple time, one set of times with a copper wire and the other set of times with a paper clip.
What could be the problem?
If its the receiver how do I know if its bad?
Could it be a fuse?

I dont recall any vehicles in 98 being a "keyless" entry for any vehicle.. so if its on the factory remote.. that means nothing.

Looking at my fuse box display - the only thing that would operate the "keyless" portion is the power window.. and I have an RS model.. so if you have a fuse that is strictly for the power locks - yes you can check the fuse there to see if it is bad - if it looks good you can still try using a different fuse (same amp!) and plug it in and try it..

When you say you changed the battery - are you talking about the remote? How did the board look inside the remote? Any signs of rust or corrosion? If there is a bad connection in the remote itself - yes - you will not be able to operate it by remote.

If these check out to be good and still at a question of wtf? My only other suggestion to you is to take off the interior door panels and check the wiring itself to the keyless entry pop lock within the door itself. Make sure no wires are touching and all wires are connected and are fastened correctly..

Doing this check list should take anyone 2-3 hours to do.. if this doesnt help - you may need to pull the whole system and either replace it or simply go back to key entry

The term keyless means you can enter the car keylessly. Not that there isn't a key hole and that car entry is keyless altogether. A lot of cars came from the factory with keyless entry. Just clearing that up in case you were confused.

sounds like a bad fob (the little remote thing). go by a dealer and ask them to test your fob. they should do it for free. they will have little box that they point it at and press certain buttons and they will be able to tell if the fob is sending a signal or not.

do you only have the 1 fob?
