hey guys i was wondering if the kevlar belt is that much better then factory?i noticed most of the moderators and wisemen say the factory is good enough but im not sure if that is because they havent tried the kevlar or not.does it really not stretch at all, stopping it from skipping teeth?any opinions will me apreciated thanks guys :thumb:

Do you really think you're going to be driving a 1990 car more than another 50,000 miles?

Most belts are killed by age. The factory belts seem to live through severe mods.

Kevlar is the cat's ass for drive belts on snowmobiles and the like but Defiant's correct on our application.
I'm gonna' have a party when I wear out a T belt before I have to tear a motor down.

Tell that to the guy who owns my old '90 GSX. 250K+ and still going strong on the original engine and trans (and driven hard with mods, too). As long as it's tensioned right, changed every 50k, and the balance shafts are removed, OEM belts are fine though.

thank you guys i really wasnt seeing it being justified to pay 175 more for a kevlar belt, and then turn right around and do it again in 50,000.thanks guys

you think oem belts are just fine to rev above 9k though??

i dont really think so.

in some parts a kevlar belt would help like higher revs... if you built a motor to rev over 9k rpms... your probably gonna wana stick the money into a nice Tbelt...

The point of the kevlar belt is that it's supposed to be permanent. You don't replace it at 50K.

I'm certain the stock ECU isn't, so there's more to consider than the timing belt.

And many, many other things.
Pray tell, what did the racers all do before kevlar came along to save them?

You won't find ten people on here who'd think of taking a DSM to 9K on the street.

You'll find that "driven hard with mods." is a relative thing!

My kevlar has held up very nicely over about 15k so far. Re used it about 6 times now and it took a shit load of power steering fluid to it and never skipped a beat. Not saying run out and buy one but Im a gambling man and will keep re using it til it proves me wrong. OEM never gave me any doubts just caught a deal on the kevlar.

I hope you mean above 9k CRANKSHAFT rpms. The belt itself gets nowhere near that speed. Without doing some exact measuring with a tape I'd guess it makes about 1/4 of the crankshaft revolutions. So increasing your redline from 7k to 9k only increases the belt speed about 500 rpm.

ROFL I guess Im scared of the fact that after my setup is done, I wont have anything else major to purchase either. I might have to pick up one of these!

so how often do you have to replace the belt then i know it doesnt last forever.
