Keeping things cool on the inside.

Ok. So I did a quick search and didn’t really find a lot on the subject but when I get home tonight I will dig a little deeper to see what I can come up with. In the mean time thought I would toss a couple ideas by the forum to see what you guys come up with.

The basic idea is to see what can be done to drop the interior temperatures to something a little more bearable in the summer. Here in Las Vegas the temps inside a car during the day can get to unbearable temps. Now I know that something other than a black dash would help and a good pair of sun visors defiantly make a difference. Also I do know that if you can paint the car all white it will help, however I want both the black dash and the factory talon look so it will have the black top. I know I am not going to maintain a cool crisp 40 deg or anything like that I am just looking to drop the temps a bit more.

So…Here is what has been done as of right now.
Window tint... 35% on the driver and passenger windows (I don’t like 20% on the sides because I can’t see out of the windows at night) 20% on the 2 back quarter windows, and 5% on the back hatch. All tint is the 7500 level tint (the good scratch resistant stuff that is suppose to reflect the heat).

I am also going to pick up a new windshield visor because my old one is a bit torn up.
I thought about a car cover but putting a cover on and taking it off every day is a pain and with all the dust and dirt here it would eventually start tearing up the paint.
Here is what I am contemplating doing...
Pull the headliner and use some injection foam on the roof and in the A/B pillars.

Possibly doing the same on the inside of the doors.

Painting the roof with a high temp ceramic paint.

What else do you think can be done? Keep in mind I really am only worried about dropping the interior temps while the car sits in the sun.

Yeah, this usually works pretty big wonders. I leave my sunroof cracked (Close it all the way, then hold the Open button till it stops. It should crack the back open a couple inches). Then, I'll crack the passenger window open. It stays cool enough to get in and not die in a couple seconds, and I'm in Denver, which is pretty similar climate-wise to Vegas. I don't do the driver's side window because we all know what it sounds like when you close a 2g door with the window down. If your windows are tight, then you could totally crack it too. But the three-way ventilation really helps!

fixing that window is actually really easy once you actually look at it.. ive pulled my window out so many times to fix my door handle that i can do it in about 5 mins..

I don’t notice that big of a difference in cracking the windows open. Temps inside the car still get to within searing range on the steering wheel and gear shift. Even with the windows all the way down the temps can get up there a ways. There are some benefits from taking simple measures like cracking the windows but I am looking for some things that could be considered a little more "long term" solutions. Let’s face it there are times when you don’t want to leave the windows cracked and there are places I have had to park where I don’t want to leave my car with the windows cracked.

Cracking the windows & sunroof helps a ton. Heat rises. Tints help as well. I used to keep a towel in the car to cover the steering wheel, that thing would be so0o0o hot in the summer. Gear shifter I never really noticed, maybe because I drive an Auto

I would suggest a sleeve of some sort for both the shifter & steering wheel. Really not much more you can do besides park in the shade.

You can make your seats heated and cooled with a kit. Basically its about 8 mini fans you install in squares you cut out of your seat foam and the heating material is a sheet with holes in it. I always wanted to do it but its not ever hot enough for me to care.

Short of growing a tree out of your trunk for shade unless you put some extreme 5-10% tint on it the sun is still going to turn it into an oven

My friend owns a window tinting shop and he has this stuff that they put on office building windows (i can't remember the name sorry) that is almost not tinted at all but reflects the UV rays and heat EXTREMELY well.

He put it on the inside of his windshield and you can't even tell it's there. It isn't reflective on the outside to make it dangerous and there is such a minimal change in the color/tint you would never know if he didn't tell you.

It is absolutely amazing in the summer. Getting into his car with tinted windows and that on the windshield is way cooler than mine when the cars were sitting out in the sun together. I am going to have him do mine before next summer to be honest... I'll try to figure out what it is called if I can or if you are interested.
