Hello all, I just picked up my 1997 Talon TSI AWD. It only has 118,000 miles on it. I've been waiting for that perfect vehicle and finally found it. It is all stock and everything works!!! Weird huh? Anyways the first thing on the agenda is to do the timing belt. Last owner didn't do one on it and didn't know when the last one was done. Here are some photos.

Thanks for all the kind comments! Would you guys suggest doing the balance shaft eliminator kit over the balance shaft belt? Or do I have no clue what i'm talking about?

Personally i would just change the belt if I was only looking for 12s. But thats just me. If you dont want to have to change it everytime you do the timing belt then i would go with a bse kit.

Nice car man. I just bought my 95 TSi AWD this summer after waiting for months to find the right car. I got lucky like you and found an unmodified one, and it only had 85k miles and one owner. I got it for about the same price too ($4800).

You want the balance shaft belt. NOT the eliminator kit.
Removed balance shafts result in high oil pressure. Which you don't need to get into yet if you decide to.

I recommend partsdinosaur.com and rockauto.com, They have a good reputation and good parts at a fraction of the cost of OEM. Highly recommend but if your OEM anal, go ahead and pay the ridiculous over-priced, re-brand named parts.

Very nice find! Super clean. I'm jealous.

That is awesome! I'm glad other people are still finding good DSMs around.

I will check out those sites! Thanks. I will also be going with just the belt.

Nice car. Good base to work with, take care of her.

sweet deal man. I know how you feel, I spent several months looking until I found my gsx.

Make sure you buy a "service manual" and a "howtobuildmax4g63t" book. They will greatly help you in the maintenance and will really help you get to know the motor and tuning paths.

Theres no need to do that, there is 56,847x more info on this site about DSM's than anywhere else.:thumb: Well anyways, its a very nice, clean looking car, so happy modding.:sneaky:

Looks good man picked me up a 97 tsi fwd talon a couple months back for 2,300 had some body damage all it need was a new door and a fender. mine has about 116,000 and the day after i got it the starter went out the a week later the time belt broke. funny thing was the car started right up when the guy showed it to me no pause no smoke nothing. ran better then any car i had ever looked at with that many miles. was planing on doing the water pump, oil pump and belts in like 3 week after i bought the car but it told me when to do it. you can see it all here. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3319510 have not put the updats of it as of right now the car is all most all striped. im building a 3 car garage that will be done in 2 week. then im pulling the engine a striping it the rest of the way then building her from the ground up. calling her the zombie eagle project.

Seems to me you have quite the project going on. Good luck with everything.

I'm trying to figure out everything I'm gonna need to buy. I think i'm going to do the water pump too. As of right now I'm ordering.

OEM Balance Shaft Bearing Front and Rear
OEM 4G63 Balance Shaft Belt
OEM 4G63 Timing Belt
OEM Timing Belt Tensioner Adjuster
OEM Water Pump Assembly

Is there anything else you guys would add to the list? Thanks for all your help.

Very Nice looks GOOD!! Yet again another red DSM LOL I swear they must of had gallons of red just laying around LOL. Good job on doing maintenance first!!

while your doing it change out the time belt/balance shaft belt pulleys and all your accessory belts. my balance shaft idler pulley was sticky i think that was part to do with the belt breaking. i took my balance shaft out and just cleaned the bearings. the guy at my tuning shop where they have a 10sec talon that is what they do when they rebuilt motors in any dsm unless you ask for a new one or have it eliminated. got to love the Sirius engines i do. the pistons took a big hit in mine bend all the intake valves all i had to do is get an new head and it was all good. when i took the head off i could still see the factory cross hatches. the guy i bought it from may have not been the good of a drive when it comes to the body but maintenance was done by the book.

Nice find! Have you done a compression test yet? I would certainly do that first to make sure your engine is healthy. I also just picked up a 2g last week myself with the mileage around yours.

Beautiful car man. I wish I could start over again with my car back in the condition it was when I bought it, like yours. Oh how I would do things differently. LOL

Yea i'm trying to do it right.

Well I ordered:
Timing belt
Timing belt tensioner
Timing belt idler pulley
Timing belt tensioner tool
Waterpump kit
Ams DSM under Hood Shifter Bushings
AMS Race Balance shaft eliminator kit

That'll be it for a little while

Congrats on the Talon. I also picked up an unmolested '97 Talon with 64k miles last August for $6000, so I think you got a great deal. There needs to be more clean Talons out there. Good luck with it! I need to do the timing belt like you ;)

Here's mine.

I've got K-Sport Coilovers on 17x8 Work Emotion CR-Kai +32 offset 245/45/17(245/40/17) not as much rub now. Gonna drop about another 1/2 inch.

Thanks so much for the compliment.
