Well I bought this 97 talon tsi a few weeks ago and have been fixing things on it since then, well I had gotten the ten day pass to drive my car to set the readiness codes (the on board checks the computer does to make sure all your emission systems work properly). Well unfortunately the ten day pass expired and it still didnt pass inspection. Basically the final issue I ran into was the 1g cas on my 2g causing a "phantom" misfire setting the check engine light. I tried the potentiometer mod (pot mod) and unfortunately it did not work. Now I have money for dsmlink. I was thinking I would be able to set my readiness codes using that system but I miss understood what the systems capabilities were on this subject. So now I have a 97 talon tsi, and I am unable to drive it :(

In my state and county I am required to pass an obdII check and a safety inspection. I have to have all but 2 readiness codes set. I have ran out my 10day pass and cant get one untill next year.

Just going on a rant... This absolutely sucks.

My plan now is to install dsmlink then drive it a couple of times a day until it passes inspection. I plan on getting it painted first then doing that, Its about perfect weather for it now so I figured I would get that out of the way. Then dsmlink, fix a few other small things here and there, pass inspection and drive it when I feel like it LOL

The 2g flashable ecu has the show all monitors as passed feature. Maybe put the car in your parents name and let them get it inspected running a 98-99 ecu?

This is the better option and cheaper route if all your other emissions stuff is in place and all you need to do is keep the CEL off for random misfires. Monitors are always set to ready with the 99 ECU.. I just went through the ringer with DSMLink v3 and trying to get the monitors to set and ended up finding an easy loop hole at the last minute to set the monitors AND have no codes. The shop that rebuilt my engine failed to tell me that they didnt put any of the emissions stuff back in and the downpipe eliminated the highflo cat i previously had. Im most likely flashing my old ECU and selling my Link because of the monitor issues i had.

I missed the part about the CAS. There is no such thing as "Phantom" misfire, knock, ect. Clearly you have a bad cam angle sensor. Try one from a 2Gb and swap wires.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about. P0300 code pops up in every 2g utilizing a 1g style cam sensor. There is no real misfire, and the cam sensor works just fine. Most people just get ECMLink to disable the function.

As for your comment about phantom knock, that's just absurd.

You are absolutely right. you can't have "phantom" misfire as there is nothing phantom about it. The car misfires, so disable it with DSMLink. Myself and numerous others have run into the issue so don't act like it doesn't exist.

I disagree. He claims the misfire is caused by a faulty cam sensor. which is NOT the case when using a 1g style cam sensor in a 2g

There is no missfire.

I have a 1g cas which makes the computer think it has a missfire, when it does not.

Its not a problem, just something that goes along with the mod if you dont turn of the missfire check.

I tried the potmod and failed.... LOL

but we live we learn so yea LOL

v2.5 was re written by a guy for use on an older palm pilots. The palm version had a "Special Feature" that helps with readiness codes.

But that is THE ONLY advantage. V3 hands down blows 2.5 out of the water in every other aspect.

That would be the big advantage i need. I could buy 2.5 pass inspection then get v3 later. but I would hate to just throw money away when time would be all thats needed to fix the problem
